of governance! It is impossible to fathom the wisdom of the Victorious Ones. The wisdom of the Great Sage, even entering for a single instant, cannot be counted in many hundreds of thousands of kalpas. This is the sixth chapter, entitled "Emptiness," from the King of Glorious Golden Light Sutras, the Lord of Sutras. Then, the four great kings, namely, the Great King Vaishravana, the Great King Dhritarashtra, the Great King Virudhaka, and the Great King Virupaksha, rose from their seats, arranged their upper garments over one shoulder, knelt on their right knees, and, with palms joined, bowed towards the Blessed One and spoke to the Blessed One as follows: "Venerable Blessed One, this King of Glorious Golden Light Sutras is spoken by all the Tathagatas, seen by all the Tathagatas, intended by all the Tathagatas, completely upheld by all the assemblies of Bodhisattvas, bowed to by all the assemblies of gods, offered to by all the assemblies of gods, praised by all the assemblies of divine rulers, worshipped, praised, extolled, and highly revered by all the protectors of the world, illuminates all the abodes of the gods, bestows supreme bliss upon all sentient beings, completely dries up all the sufferings of sentient beings in hells, animal realms, and the realm of Yama, cuts off the stream of all fears, completely averts all armies of the enemy, completely pacifies all famine-stricken lands, completely pacifies all disease-stricken lands, dispels all planets, brings supreme peace, completely pacifies sorrow and afflictions, completely pacifies various kinds of harm, and completely destroys hundreds of thousands of harms. Venerable Blessed One, if this King of Glorious Golden Light Sutras is widely and accurately expounded in the assembly, then by hearing this Dharma, this essence of the nectar of Dharma, we four great kings, together with our armies and attendants, will have our divine bodies increase with great splendor. Fortune, glory, and perfection will also enter their bodies. Venerable Bhagavan, we four great kings are endowed with Dharma, speak the Dharma, and are kings of the Dharma. Venerable Bhagavan, we, through the Dharma, act as kings of gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, non-humans, and great belly-crawlers. We will avert the malevolent assembly of bhutas, who are without compassion and steal the radiance of others. Venerable Bhagavan, we four great kings, together with the twenty-eight great yaksha commanders and hundreds of thousands of yakshas, constantly and perpetually, with pure divine eyes that transcend human vision, will look upon all of Jambudvipa, protect it, and completely guard it. Venerable Bhagavan, for that reason, we four great kings are named 'World Protectors.' Venerable Bhagavan, whoever in this Jambudvipa is to have their country destroyed by enemy armies, or suffer the calamity of famine, or the calamity of disease, or be afflicted by various hundreds of calamities, thousands of calamities, and hundreds of thousands of calamities, Venerable Bhagavan, we four great kings will encourage those Dharma-speaking monks who uphold this 'Golden Light Sutra, the King of Sutras.' Venerable Bhagavan, when we four great kings honor those Dharma-speaking monks with miraculous powers and blessings, wherever they go, this 'Golden Light Sutra, the King of Sutras' will be widely and correctly taught in those countries, and thus, various hundreds of calamities and thousands of calamities that occur in the country will be completely pacified. Venerable Bhagavan, in whatever king's country those Dharma-speaking monks who uphold the sutras go, this 'Golden Light Sutra, the King of Sutras' will also be revered in those countries. May [they] always protect from all adversaries. May [they] completely save, completely embrace, and completely nurture. Venerable Blessed One, we four great kings will always protect all sentient beings residing in that kingdom of the human king. May [they] completely save, completely embrace, and completely nurture, and may [they] become peaceful and happy. Venerable Blessed One, whenever a human king makes happy with all things of happiness the bhikkhu, or bhikkhuni, or upasaka, or upasika who holds the Sovereign of Sutras. Venerable Blessed One, we four great kings will make happy and complete with all things of happiness all sentient beings residing in that kingdom of the human king with all things of happiness. Venerable Blessed One, whenever a human king respects, esteems, serves, and makes offerings to the bhikkhu, or bhikkhuni, or upasaka, or upasika who holds the Sovereign of Sutras. Venerable Blessed One, we four great kings will respect, esteem, serve, and make offerings to that human king more than all kings, and we will also praise him greatly in all lands. Then the Blessed One gave the four great kings the word "Well done," and the great kings said, "Well done, well done! Great kings, you too are well done, well done!" Thus, you have done more than the previous Buddhas, generated virtuous roots, served and honored many hundreds of thousands of billions of Buddhas, are endowed with Dharma, speak Dharma, and have become kings of gods and humans through Dharma. Thus, you have long possessed a mind that benefits all sentient beings, possessed a mind of happiness and love, have entered into the superior intention to benefit and bring happiness to all sentient beings, prevent all harm, and strive to accomplish all happiness for all sentient beings. You four great kings are always diligent in making offerings and serving that human king, the King of the Sovereign of the Excellent Golden Light Sutra.
