Having heard the Samadhi, he rose from his seat, folded his palms, and respectfully addressed the Blessed One, saying: "Blessed One, if it is indeed the case that the Tathagatas do not enter Nirvana and do not possess relics, then why is it said in the Sutras that they enter Nirvana and that the Buddhas possess relics? For the sake of allowing gods and humans to make offerings, show respect, and pay homage, the Buddhas of the past also displayed their relics and resided in the world, so that gods and humans, by making offerings and paying homage, would obtain immeasurable merit. Thus it was said, but now it is said that there are none, and therefore doubt and hesitation have arisen. Blessed One, please have compassion on us and explain this in detail." Then, the Blessed One spoke to the Bodhisattva Beautiful Crest and the many attendants: "You should understand it in this way: there is Nirvana and there are relics." This was said according to intention, so listen carefully to its meaning. Sons of noble family, Bodhisattvas Mahasattvas should know that through these ten dharmas, the Tathagata, the perfectly enlightened Buddha, attains ultimate Nirvana in the sense of Suchness. What are the ten? The first is that the Tathagatas have abandoned and exhausted all obscurations of afflictions and obscurations of knowledge, therefore it is called Nirvana. The second is that the Tathagatas have fully understood that beings are without self-nature and dharmas are without self-nature, therefore it is called Nirvana. The third is that the abode of the body and the abode of the Dharma are completely transformed, therefore it is called Nirvana. The fourth is that the causes and conditions for accomplishing the benefit of sentient beings naturally and spontaneously subside, therefore it is called Nirvana. The fifth is that the Dharmakaya is possessed by the equality of Suchness, without difference in characteristics.

Because of realizing the supreme meaning, it is called complete nirvana. Sixth, because of understanding that samsara and nirvana are not two in essence, it is called complete nirvana. Seventh, because of understanding the root of all dharmas and realizing purity, it is called complete nirvana. Eighth, because yogis have well cultivated the non-arising and non-ceasing of all dharmas, it is called complete nirvana. Ninth, because of realizing true wisdom through suchness, the realm of dharma, and the equality of true reality, it is called complete nirvana. Tenth, because of realizing that there is no difference between the essence of all dharmas and the essence of nirvana, it is called complete nirvana. Sons of the lineage, these are the ten dharmas that explain the existence of complete nirvana. Furthermore, sons of the lineage, Bodhisattva Mahasattvas should understand that the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened One, through these ten dharmas, in the manner of the meaning of suchness, proclaimed the ultimate, existing great complete nirvana. What are these ten? First, all afflictions are based on desire, therefore they arise from desire, and the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, because they have completely cut off desire, are called complete nirvana. Second, because the Tathagatas have completely cut off the desires of afflictions, they do not accept any dharma, and because they do not accept, they have neither gone nor come, and because there is no acceptance, it is called complete nirvana. Third, thus the Tathagata has no going or coming, and no acceptance, what is said is that the Dharmakaya is without arising and ceasing, and because it has become without arising and ceasing, it is called complete nirvana. Fourth, that which is without arising and ceasing cannot be expressed by words, because the path of words is completely cut off, it is called complete nirvana.

It should be known thus. Fifth, it is called complete nirvana because one has attained the state where only the phenomena of selflessness and impersonality arise and cease. Sixth, all afflictions and near afflictions are sudden dust, and the nature of reality is the master. Because the Buddhas understand that there is no going and no coming, it is called complete nirvana. Seventh, suchness is true, and all else is untrue. The nature of truth is suchness, and the nature of suchness is the Tathagata. Therefore, it is called complete nirvana. Eighth, the nature of the ultimate truth is without elaboration. Only the Tathagata directly realizes the Dharma of the ultimate truth and completely cuts off elaboration. Therefore, it is called complete nirvana. Ninth, that which is unborn is true, and that which is born is untrue. Therefore, foolish children are immersed in samsara and carried away by desire. The body of the Tathagata is truly not false. Therefore, it is called complete nirvana. Tenth, that which is not the true Dharma arises from conditions, and that which is the true Dharma does not arise from conditions. The nature of the Dharmakaya of the Tathagata is true. Therefore, it is called complete nirvana. Sons of good family, these are the ten Dharmas that show that there is complete nirvana. Furthermore, sons of good family, Bodhisattva Mahasattvas, etc., also know by these ten Dharmas that the Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly enlightened Buddha, speaks of the ultimate great nirvana with the meaning of suchness. What are the ten? First, the Tathagata understands well that giving and the fruit of giving are without self and without what belongs to self. Therefore, he cuts off wrong views about giving and the fruit of giving.
