These two attained long life. Therefore, the measure of the Great Sage (Shakyamuni)'s life is difficult to know. Just as the end of a kalpa is unattainable, so is the measure of his life. Beautiful Crest, you should know this, do not generate hesitation or doubt. Because the Victorious One's life is immeasurable, the number of it cannot be known. Thereafter, the Bodhisattva Beautiful Crest, having heard the four Tathagatas declare the immeasurable lifespan of the Bhagavan Shakyamuni, addressed those Bhagavans thus: "For what reason did the Tathagata show such a short lifespan?" Thereafter, those four Bhagavans spoke to the Bodhisattva Beautiful Crest: "Son of good family, when the Bhagavan Shakyamuni appeared in the world during the time of the five degenerations, people had a lifespan of one hundred years, and were of inferior nature, with small and meager roots of virtue, and without faith. Therefore, most of those sentient beings were attached to self, attached to person, attached to beings and life, attached to the nourisher, attached to wrong views, attached to self and what belongs to self, attached to permanence and annihilation, and so forth. In order to benefit those many sentient beings and many non-Buddhists, to generate correct wisdom, and to quickly perfect the unsurpassed Bodhi, therefore the Tathagata Shakyamuni showed such a short lifespan. Son of good family, furthermore, if the Tathagata sees sentient beings seeing complete Nirvana, they will generate the thought of it being extremely difficult to see, as well as thoughts of sorrow and suffering, and thus quickly take up, hold, memorize, read, recite, and understand the teachings of the Sutras spoken by the Buddhas, the Bhagavans, and teach them correctly to others, and will not slander them. In order to accomplish this, therefore the Tathagata showed such a short lifespan. Why is that? If those sentient beings were to see the Tathagata not entering Nirvana, they would not even respectfully serve him."

They also do not generate the thought of being extremely rare to encounter, nor do they take, hold, read, recite, fully understand, or teach to others the profound sutras spoken by the Tathagata. Why is that? It is because they do not show respect as they always see the Buddha. Noble son, for example, if a person sees that his father has a lot of wealth and precious jewels that are increasing, he will not have a sense of wonder and rarity towards those riches. Why is that? It is because he has a constant thought about his father's riches. Noble son, many sentient beings are also like that; if they always see the Tathagata not entering nirvana, they will not have a sense of wonder and rarity. Why is that? Because they always see him. Noble son, for example, if a person's parents are poor and lack wealth, and that poor person goes to the palace of a king or the house of a great minister, and sees a treasury full of various precious jewels and wealth, he will generate a sense of wonder and rarity. At that time, that poor person, in order to acquire all the wealth, will widely arrange methods of effort and diligently strive without laziness. Why is that? It is in order to abandon poverty and experience the enjoyment of happiness. Noble son, many sentient beings are also like that; if they see the Tathagata entering nirvana, they will generate thoughts ranging from the thought of being rare to see, to sadness and suffering, and they will also think like this: The Tathagatas appear in the world only after countless immeasurable eons have passed, like the udumbara flower, which appears only once in a hundred. Thus, many sentient beings generate thoughts of wonder and generate the thought of being extremely rare to see. Even if they see the Tathagata, they will treat him with respect and joy, and truly

If one hears the teaching of this Dharma, one should generate the thought that it is the true word of the Buddha. One should truly uphold all the Sutras, no matter how many there are, and not slander them. Son of good family, because of this cause and condition, that Bhagavan will not remain in the world for long, but will pass into complete Nirvana. Son of good family, the Tathagatas know such skillful means and cause sentient beings to fully mature. At that time, those four Tathagatas spoke these words and then immediately disappeared. Then, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Ornament of Beauty, together with hundreds of thousands of immeasurable Bodhisattvas, and hundreds of thousands of billions of nayutas of sentient beings, went to Mount Gridhrakuta (Vulture Peak Mountain), and arrived before the All-Knowing One, the Tathagata Shakyamuni, and bowed their heads at the feet of the Bhagavan, and sat down on one side. Then, the Bodhisattva Ornament of Beauty extensively requested the Bhagavan about the things mentioned above. At that time, those four Tathagatas also went to Mount Gridhrakuta, to the place where the Bhagavan Shakyamuni was, and sat down on their respective seats as they were, and then spoke to the attendant Bodhisattvas as follows: Son of good family, go to the place where the Bhagavan Shakyamuni is, and with my words, ask: Are you slightly unwell? Are you slightly tired? Are you comfortable in rising and sitting? Are you living happily in all your activities? Please inquire in this way. Furthermore, say this: The Tathagata Shakyamuni, in order to benefit all sentient beings, completely eliminates the obstacles of famine and places them in happiness, and today teaches the meaning of the Dharma of the Sutra of Golden Light, which is extremely profound.
