At the time when a disaster occurred in that place, the people were frightened and hid their belongings from each other, not knowing what to do. The boy named "With Hands" hid his two hands and said to the crowd: 'O benefactors, please do not harbor resentment, do not speak harshly. Alas, these two hands of mine, I have obtained them after a very, very long time!' Later one day, the boy "With Hands" went to the garden of King Victorious. There, he saw the Blessed One, the Buddha, whose body was well adorned with the thirty-two major marks of a great being, beautified by the eighty minor marks, adorned with a fathom of light, possessing light surpassing a thousand suns, like a mountain of jewels, perfect in every way. As soon as he saw the Buddha, his heart was filled with joy. Having generated joy, he prostrated at the feet of the Blessed One, and sat before the Blessed One in order to listen to the Dharma. Then, the Blessed One understood his thoughts, habits, inclinations, and nature, and taught him the Dharma in such a way that he would realize the Four Noble Truths. Having heard the Dharma, "With Hands" destroyed the twenty high peaks of the mountain of the "view of the aggregates" with the vajra of wisdom, and realized the fruit of stream-entry. Having seen the truth, he informed his parents and renounced in the teachings of the Blessed One. Through diligence, practice, and effort, he recognized that this wheel of the five aggregates of samsara is wavering and unstable, and thus thoroughly understood that all conditioned phenomena are of the nature of decay, decline, dissipation, and destruction. Having abandoned all defilements, he realized the state of an Arhat. This Arhat, having become free from the desire of the three realms, was equal to gold and dung, possessed a mind as equal as the sky and the palm of the hand, and became as cool as sandalwood soaked in water. He destroyed the shell of ignorance with wisdom, and obtained wisdom, supernormal powers, and analytical knowledge. He did not look to worldly gain, attachment, and reverence. He was worshipped, remembered, and reverently praised by the gods, including the gods with their retinues.

became the place of... Even though he attained the state of an Arhat, he still taught the Dharma to the monks, saying, 'Alas, do not harbor hatred in your minds towards the places of offering! Do not speak harsh words! Alas, my two hands were only obtained after a very long time!' Then, the monks became doubtful and asked the Buddha, the Bhagavan, who cuts off all doubts: 'Venerable One, what kind of actions did the one with hands perform and accumulate that he attained the state of an Arhat, but still says, "Alas, my two hands were only obtained after a very long time!"?' The Bhagavan replied: 'Monks, these are the directly visible results of actions! Do you wish to hear how he thought and spoke those words?' The venerable ones said: 'We wish to hear.' Monks, the one with hands himself, in other past lives, accumulated merit and possessed the complete conditions, appearing like crossing a strong current. Because he performed and accumulated those actions that would inevitably bring consequences, how could others experience the actions that the one with hands himself performed and accumulated? Monks, the actions performed and accumulated will not ripen in the external realm of earth, nor will they ripen in the realms of water, fire, or wind. The virtuous and non-virtuous actions performed and accumulated will only ripen in the aggregates, elements, and sense bases that are grasped. The actions of sentient beings will not be lost even after hundreds of thousands of eons. When the accumulations gather and the time arrives, they will naturally ripen into their fruit.' Monks, in the past, in a bygone era, in this very fortunate eon, when the lifespan of beings was twenty thousand years, the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened One, endowed with knowledge and conduct, the Well-Gone, Knower of the World, Supreme Guide of those to be trained, Teacher of gods and humans, the Buddha, the Bhagavan, named Light Protector, appeared in the world. He resided and dwelt in the Deer Park where sages speak in the city of Varanasi. Once, there lived two friendly monks there, one of whom was an Arhat.
