So. Then, the Sangha made a rule that no one should sweep the Blessed One's chamber, so he freely swept the chamber and went for alms in Shravasti (mnyan du yod par). At that time, the venerable Shariputra also vowed to stay in the garden of King Prasenajit with five hundred followers, and came to Shravasti (mnyan du yod par), generated respect for the teacher, and swept the chamber. Then, the venerable Adeghosa felt it and said: Venerable, your sweeping of the chamber has taken away my livelihood. The venerable said: What is the fault? Adeghosa said: Venerable, when I do not sweep the chamber, I cannot get alms. Then, the venerable Shariputra said: If so, where shall I borrow, do not be discouraged, I will give you food there. Then, the venerable Shariputra came with five hundred followers to invite him, and Adeghosa also went with them. Then, when they went near the door of that householder, due to the ripening of Adeghosa's karma, a great fire broke out in that house. Then, the venerable Adeghosa thought: Because I have little merit, the fire broke out. Then, he returned to the monastery and fasted. Then, the next day, the venerable Shariputra said: Why did you not come? He said: Venerable, do you not know how the fire broke out there because I have little merit? Then, the venerable Shariputra brought him forward that day, and went into that house, and even though he was sitting in the midst of the Sangha, food was being distributed to the left and right, but even the distributor forgot him, and he fasted twice in the midst of the Sangha. Then, after a while, the venerable Ananda heard about this. Having heard this, he also said to Adeghosa: Then you stay in the garden of King Prasenajit, and I will bring you food. Venerable A

Ananda, having memorized eighty thousand aggregates of Dharma from the Blessed One and twenty thousand from other monks, possessed such mindfulness. However, due to the karmic obscuration of Devadatta, even the venerable Ananda forgot, and thus he also fasted three times. Then, on the fourth day, the venerable Ananda exerted himself to beg for alms, but as he was returning, the food was snatched away by dogs, and thus he also fasted four times. Then, on the fifth day, the great venerable Maudgalyayana heard of this and, for the sake of Devadatta, begged for alms and set out with his miraculous powers. However, due to the ripening of Devadatta's karma, he was struck by the wings of the Garuda, the king of birds, and cast into the ocean, and thus he also fasted five times. Then, on the sixth day, the venerable Shariputra heard of this and thought to himself, 'Only I can beg for alms for Devadatta, there is no mistake.' Then, the venerable Shariputra begged for alms for him and, making himself invisible in that house, arrived at the door of Devadatta's dwelling. Then, due to the ripening of Devadatta's karma, the door was surrounded by rock. Then, the venerable Shariputra thought to open the door with his miraculous powers and placed the alms bowl on the ground. Again, due to the ripening of Devadatta's karma, it sank downwards to the golden ground eighty thousand yojanas below. Even then, the venerable Shariputra retrieved the bowl with his miraculous powers, thinking to put the food in his mouth, but when the food was placed in his mouth, due to the ripening of his karma, the mouth disappeared and the food was thrown outside. Then, the venerable Shariputra, knowing that Devadatta had no merit, became saddened. Thus, that monk also fasted six times. Then, on the seventh day, the venerable Devadatta, in order to generate weariness in sentient beings, to show that actions are not in vain, and to speak of the power of karma, filled his bowl with ashes, sat before the Sangha of monks including the Buddha, mixed it with water, drank it, and passed into nirvana without remainder of aggregates.

passed completely into nirvana in the realm of peace. Then, the monks, seeing this, became sorrowful and made offerings to his remains. Then, the monks became doubtful and asked the Buddha, the Blessed One, who cuts off all doubts: "Venerable one, what deeds did this venerable Gusgos do that, although he attained the state of an arhat, he fasted for six days and on the seventh day, like a lamp extinguished, passed completely into nirvana in the realm of nirvana without remainder?" The Blessed One replied: "Monks, this Gusgos himself, in other past lives, accumulated merit and possessed the complete conditions, arising like a flood, and because he did and accumulated those deeds that would inevitably come to pass, how could anyone else experience those deeds done and accumulated by Gusgos himself? Monks, the deeds done and accumulated will not ripen in the external realm of earth, nor will they ripen in the realm of water, fire, or wind. The good and non-good deeds done and accumulated will only ripen in the aggregates, realms, and sources that are grasped. The deeds of sentient beings are not lost even after hundreds of eons. When the collection comes together and the time arrives, they will ripen into their own fruit. Monks, in the past, in a past time, in the city of Varanasi (Bārāṇasī), there was the wife of a householder who was faithful, virtuous, and of good mind, and she constantly gave alms to ascetics, Brahmins, the poor, the destitute, and beggars. Later, her husband died, and after a while, her son became the master of the house. But he was a miser, stingy, clinging to possessions, not even giving offerings to crows. When he saw ascetics, Brahmins, the poor, the destitute, and beggars, he became angry in his heart. His mother, as before, continued to give alms and great alms to ascetics, Brahmins, the poor, the destitute, and beggars. Then, that son, overwhelmed by miserliness, said: Mother,
