Do not give alms out of distrust. He said, "There is one son in this house, according to the custom of the house, it is he." Then he set aside some food, but he would still give half of the food as alms, and eat half himself. Then, that foolish person, oppressed by stinginess and blinded by anger, repeatedly prevented him. No matter how he tried to prevent him, he could not stop him, so he said to his mother, "Mother, I have something to do, please go into the house." Then, the mother, who was upright by nature, went into the house. Then he closed the door and cut off her food for one day, and she said, "Son, I am hungry." Then he spoke harsh words, saying, "Go and tread on ashes!" Then, after a while, that miserable, uncomfortable, and afflicted person cried out in a pitiful voice, but he was made to fast for six days and was not released, and then he died. However, that person blinded by stinginess had no regret for being separated from his mother. The Blessed One said, "Monks, what do you think? At that time, the one who became the son of the householder was this Devadatta. Due to the ripening of the karma of harming his mother, he was born in the great hell of Avīci for one kalpa. For that very reason, even though he has now attained Arhatship, he fasted, ate ashes, and completely passed into Nirvana. Monks, Devadatta also performed and accumulated other karmas. Monks, in the past, in a past time, in the city of Varanasi, there was a Brahmin who was relied upon, a Brahmin residing in Varanasi, and all the householders and people universally revered him, regarded him as a guru, drew pictures of him, offered and honored him. By nature, when Buddhas do not appear in the world, solitary Buddhas who have compassion for the poor and afflicted, who live in remote dwellings, and are the sole source of merit in the world, appear in the world. After some time, a solitary Buddha went to Varanasi for alms, and there, his hand and bowl were filled, and as he came out, the Brahmin saw him, and he became stingy, looked at the bowl, and said, 'Bring it here!'

It was done. The Hearers and Solitary Buddhas do not know without thinking; this was taught by that venerable one. Then, he struck the ground with his foot. Then, even though that Solitary Buddha was fasting, that Brahmin did not feel remorse. Monks, what do you think? The one who became a Brahmin at that time and in that era is this Tigusgosa. Furthermore, he went forth during the time of the Blessed One Kashyapa, and because he guarded the place of pure conduct there, he has now directly realized the state of an Arhat. Monks, thus, those actions that are definitely dark will definitely have a result that is dark. Those actions that are definitely white will definitely have a result that is definitely white. Mixed actions will have mixed results. Monks, therefore, abandon those actions that are definitely dark and mixed, and dedicate yourselves solely to those actions that are definitely white. Monks, you should train yourselves in this way. After the Blessed One spoke these words, the monks rejoiced and praised what the Blessed One had said. Saṃsāra, which means that kings, great ministers, wealthy people, people of the palace retinue, merchants, ship captains, gods, nāgas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas honored, respected, regarded as teachers, depicted, and made offerings to the Buddha, the Blessed One. The Buddha, the Blessed One, who is offered to and known by gods, nāgas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas, possessed great merit, and obtained robes, food, bedding, seats, medicines, and medical supplies, together with the monastic community of Hearers, was dwelling in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove of Prince Jeta, in the pleasure garden of Anathapindika. At that time, in Shravasti, there was a householder who was wealthy, had much wealth, enjoyed great prosperity, and had extensive and vast holdings.

Endowed with the wealth of Vaishravana, one who rivaled the wealth of Vaishravana resided there. He took a wife from among his own kin, and together they played and rejoiced, indulging in pleasure and delight. As he played and rejoiced, indulging in pleasure and delight, his wife conceived. After eight or nine months, she gave birth to a son, a boy who was handsome, pleasing to behold, and beautiful, with all limbs and features complete. As soon as he was born, he looked at all the people in the house and spoke, saying: Alas! Samsara is suffering! Samsara is exceedingly suffering! After saying this, he remained silent. Then, they held a birth celebration for him and discussed what name to give the boy. The relatives said: As soon as he was born, he proclaimed 'Samsara, Samsara,' so therefore, let us name this boy Samsara. Then, the boy Samsara was entrusted to eight nurses: two nurses to hold and nourish him, two nurses to give him milk, two nurses to wash away his impurities, and two nurses to play with him. These eight nurses nurtured him with milk, yogurt, butter, ghee, the essence of butter, and other excellent provisions, causing him to grow rapidly like a lotus in a lake. Then, as he gradually grew up, he naturally remembered his past lives and taught the Dharma to the assembly of beings, saying: O lamas and those like lamas, parents, khenpos, and acharyas, do not speak harsh words! Samsara is suffering! Samsara is exceedingly suffering! Then, after some time, as he wandered here and there, he went to the garden of Prince Jeta. There, he saw the Buddha, the Bhagavan, perfectly adorned with the thirty-two major marks of a great being, beautified with the eighty minor marks, adorned with a fathom of light, possessing light surpassing a thousand suns, like a walking mountain of jewels, all-good. As soon as he saw the Bhagavan, his mind was filled with joy. Having generated joy, he prostrated at the feet of the Bhagavan and sat before the Bhagavan in order to listen to the Dharma. Then, the Bhagavan
