Thereafter, he played and rejoiced with her. As he played and rejoiced, his wife became pregnant. When she was eight or nine months pregnant, she gave birth to a boy. As soon as the boy was born, his entire body appeared to be covered with blisters. When those blisters burst, the flesh turned blackish-purple. Pus and blood flowed from his body, emitting a very foul odor. Then, his father, through the power of his wealth, supported him with riches, mantras, medicine, and servants. However, due to the force of karma, the disease did not subside, and his entire body remained in that condition. He felt ashamed and covered himself with clothes, so he was named "Covered." Later, after some time, the boy "Covered" grew up, and his friends and peers lived in the city called "Possessing Wealth." Those people said to his father, "Father, if you take him to 'Possessing Wealth,' there are doctors and medicines and so on, perhaps they can cure his disease." Then, his father listened to those words, gave many jewels and servants, and sent him to "Possessing Wealth." He gradually went to "Possessing Wealth" with his friends and peers. Although there were many doctors, riches, medicines, and servants there, they could not cure the disease born from his karma. Later, after some time, he went to Prince Jeta's garden. There, he saw the Buddha, the Bhagavan, whose body was perfectly adorned with the thirty-two major marks of a great being, beautified by the eighty minor marks, adorned with a fathom of light, possessing light surpassing a thousand suns, beautiful like a walking mountain of jewels. As soon as he saw the Buddha, his heart was filled with joy. He arose with joy, prostrated at the feet of the Buddha, and sat before the Buddha in order to hear the Dharma. Then, the Bhagavan understood his thoughts, habits, inclinations, and nature, and taught him the Dharma in such a way that he would realize the Four Noble Truths. Having heard the Dharma, he recognized the five aggregates of appropriation as disease, blisters, pain, and

and realized that it was impermanent and suffering. Having realized that all conditioned phenomena are impermanent, he renounced the world in the doctrine of the Blessed One. Through diligence, practice, and effort, he realized that this wheel of samsara of the five-eyed fool was shaking and unstable, and thus determined that all aspects of conditioned phenomena were of the nature of destruction, falling, dissipation, and annihilation. Having abandoned all defilements, he directly realized the state of an Arhat. The Arhat, having become detached from the desires of the three realms, treated gold and dung equally, possessed a mind as indistinguishable as the sky and the palm of his hand, and became as cool as if soaked in sandalwood. He destroyed the eggshell with wisdom, obtained wisdom, supernormal powers, and individual perfect knowledge, did not covet gain, attachment, and respect, and became an object of worship, reverence, and respect by the gods, including the gods with their retinues. His friends and companions also renounced the world because of his renunciation, and they went to the place where the venerable Sbeta was, and after arriving, they said this to the venerable Sbeta: Venerable Sbeta, what in the world is the law of destruction? What in the world is not the law of destruction? Venerable ones, form is the law of destruction. Its cessation, Nirvana, is not the law of destruction. Venerable ones, feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness are the law of destruction. Its cessation, Nirvana, is not the law of destruction. Venerable ones, what do you think? Is form permanent or impermanent? Venerable Sbeta, it is impermanent. Venerable ones, whatever is impermanent, is it suffering? Or is it not suffering? Venerable Sbeta, it is suffering. Venerable ones, for what is impermanent, suffering, and subject to change, would a learned and noble disciple think: This is mine, I am this, this is my self? Would he cling to it as self?

That is not so. What do you think, venerable ones? Is feeling, perception, volitional formations, and consciousness permanent or impermanent? Venerable ones, it is impermanent. Venerable ones, is what is impermanent painful or not painful? Venerable ones, it is painful. Venerable ones, would a well-taught noble disciple, regarding what is impermanent, painful, and subject to change, consider it as 'This is mine, this I am, this is my self'? That is not so, venerable ones. Therefore, venerable ones, whatever form there is, whether past, future, or present; internal or external; gross or subtle; inferior or superior; far or near; all form should be seen as it really is with correct wisdom: 'This is not mine, this I am not, this is not my self.' Whatever feeling, perception, volitional formations, and consciousness there is, whether past, future, or present; internal or external; gross or subtle; inferior or superior; far or near; all feeling, perception, volitional formations, and consciousness should be seen as it really is with correct wisdom: 'This is not mine, this I am not, this is not my self.' Venerable ones, seeing thus, the well-taught noble disciple becomes disenchanted with form, disenchanted with feeling, perception, volitional formations, and consciousness. Being disenchanted, he becomes dispassionate. Through dispassion, he is liberated. When liberated, there is the knowledge that 'Birth is exhausted, the holy life has been lived, what had to be done has been done, there is no more coming to any state of being.' When this discourse was being delivered, those companions had their eyes on the Dharma, free from dust and taint, and were completely purified.
