Then, the monks arose with doubts. To dispel all doubts, they asked the Blessed One, the Buddha: "Venerable One, what deeds did Sbeta (a name) commit that caused his body to be so ugly, diseased, and foul-smelling? And what deeds did he commit that caused his wisdom to be sharp and clear, even to the point that he could attain the state of an Arhat after ordaining?" The Blessed One replied: "Monks, it is precisely because Sbeta accumulated merit in other lifetimes, possessed the conditions for accomplishment, and arose like a wave overcoming obstacles, that he performed and accumulated those deeds that would not be devoured by spirits. How could the deeds that Sbeta himself performed and accumulated be experienced by someone else? Monks, the deeds that have been performed and accumulated will not mature in the external realm of earth, nor will they mature in the realms of water, fire, or wind. The virtuous and non-virtuous deeds that have been performed and accumulated will mature only in the aggregates, realms, and sources that are clung to. The deeds of sentient beings, Will not be lost even in hundreds of kalpas. When the conditions gather and the time arrives, They will surely mature into fruition. Monks, in the past, there was a merchant living in the city of Varanasi (an ancient Indian city). He was not on good terms with another merchant, so he offered many riches to the king and pleaded: 'O divine one, this merchant has committed a wrong. Please punish him and severely reprimand him.' Then, the king granted his request and had the man punished. After that, the man brought me to his house and whipped me. Then, blood flowed from my body, and he sprinkled much poisonous powder on me, causing my body to swell up like black pieces of meat. Later, the merchant's friends heard about what had happened to him, gathered together, and healed his illness with the special properties of various instruments. After that, he became weary and left his home alone. After ordaining, he practiced the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment without a teacher and ultimately attained the enlightenment of a Pratyekabuddha. Then, the thought arose in his mind: 'That merchant created non-merit from my continuum.'

If I cannot generate great compassion, I must go before him and make him feel regret. Then, he went before that Pratyekabuddha, appeared in the sky above, and displayed various kinds of miracles. For ordinary people, miracles quickly generate faith. He bowed at the feet of the Pratyekabuddha as if cutting the roots of a tree, and with palms joined, he prayed to the Blessed One: Great field of merit, please descend. I have wronged you, and these things arise because of you. Having said this, he apologized to that Pratyekabuddha, offered food and clothing, and made the aspiration: May I not experience the karmic result of offending you in anger, and may I obtain such qualities through my reverence and offerings to you. May I please a teacher who is even more excellent than this, and may I not displease him. The Blessed One said: Monks, what do you think? The merchant at that time was this Sbyed-pa (Hider), and due to that karma, he died under the whip for five hundred lifetimes. For that very reason, he has now obtained such a body. Furthermore, during the time of the Blessed One Light-Protecting, he and his friends went forth together, and there they guarded the place of pure conduct, so now they have realized the state of Arhat. Monks, therefore, those that are definitely black deeds, their ripening will also definitely be black. Those that are definitely white deeds, their ripening will also definitely be white. Mixed deeds, their ripening will also be mixed. Monks, therefore, abandon those that are definitely black deeds and mixed deeds, and rely solely on those that are definitely white deeds. Monks, you should train yourselves in this way. After the Blessed One had spoken thus, the monks rejoiced and praised what the Blessed One had said. The Impurity Meditation is, the Buddha, the Blessed One.

Kings, great ministers, wealthy people, people of the palace, merchants, captains, gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas honored, revered, venerated, and made offerings to him. The Blessed One, endowed with great merit, who was worshiped and known by gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas, who had obtained robes, food, bedding, seats, medicine for the sick, and medicinal supplies, together with the Sangha of Hearers, was dwelling in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove, in the garden of Anathapindika. At that time, in a place called Bharga, there lived a householder who was rich, wealthy, and enjoyed great prosperity, whose possessions were vast and extensive, who possessed the wealth of Vaishravana, and who rivaled the wealth of Vaishravana. He took a wife from the same lineage, and together with her, he played, rejoiced, and enjoyed himself. As he played, rejoiced, and enjoyed himself, his wife became pregnant. After eight or nine months, she gave birth to a son, a boy endowed with eighteen kinds of ugliness. Both parents were fond of the child and raised him. Then, when he gradually grew up, because of his ugliness, both parents drove him out of the house. Wherever he went, he was driven away by many people because he was undesirable. Even the creatures born in the animal realm despised him with their majesty, what need is there to mention those who have become human? He was driven out of the city and lived in a pleasure garden called Dong Ya. Sometimes, if he found fruits and roots, he would eat them. Sometimes, if he could not find fruits and roots, he would live on grass, flowers, and leaves. Then, the Blessed One, seeing that the time had come to tame the ugly one, spoke to the four great Hearers: 'Monks, come here, I will tame the ugly one.'
