That which is called Ganga: The Blessed Buddha was honored, respected, regarded as a guru, made into a ritual, and offered to by kings and great ministers, as well as wealthy people and the people of the palace retinue, merchants and captains, as well as gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kimnaras, and mahoragas. The Blessed Buddha, who was worshiped and known by gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kimnaras, and mahoragas, possessed great merit, and obtained clothes, food, bedding, cushions, medical treatment, and medicine. Together with the Shravaka Sangha, he resided in the hermitage of the Rishi Speaking Deer Forest in the city of Varanasi. At that time, in the city of Varanasi, there lived a householder who was rich, wealthy, enjoyed great prosperity, was vast and extensive, possessed the wealth of Vaishravana, and rivaled the wealth of Vaishravana. He took a wife from the same lineage, and together with her, he played, rejoiced, and enjoyed pleasure. Although he played, rejoiced, and enjoyed pleasure, he had neither a son nor a daughter, so he clasped his hands together and thought: Although I possess countless family riches, I have neither a son nor a daughter, and after I die, because there is no son, all my possessions will be owned by the king. Thinking this, he was depressed in his heart. Then, ascetics, Brahmins, diviners, friends, relatives, and other relatives urged him: Pray to the gods! Then, that woman, desiring a son, prayed to the god Kumara, the water god, Kubera, Indra, Brahma, and other special gods. For example, she prayed to the guardian deity of the pleasure garden, the guardian deity of the forest, the guardian deity of the crossroads of the road, the guardian deity of the three-way intersection, the guardian deity who receives the torma, the co-born deity, those who are in harmony with the Dharma, and the gods who always follow behind, because in the world, sons and daughters are born through prayer.
