Although there is a saying that "there is a transformation in the intermediate state," that is not the case. If one could have sons and daughters through prayer, then like a great Chakravartin king, each person would have thousands upon thousands of sons. Generally, the birth of sons and daughters is the result of the combination of three conditions. What are these three conditions? The two parents meet with passion aroused, the mother is in her season and has her menstruation, and a gandharva comes. It is from the combination of these three conditions that sons and daughters are born. Then, that person is diligently praying, and a being dies and transmigrates from one class of beings and enters the womb of that person's wife. Some women of wise nature have five unique qualities. What are these five qualities? They know when a man is aroused and when he is not aroused; they know the time and also know the menstruation; they know when conception has occurred; they know from what cause conception has occurred; they know whether it is a boy or a girl. If it is a boy, it dwells and abides on the right side of the abdomen. If it is a girl, it dwells and abides on the left side of the abdomen. Then, she is overjoyed and tells her husband, "Lord, I am pregnant, and it dwells and abides on the right side of my abdomen, so it is certain to be a boy. Please be pleased!" Then, he is also overjoyed, raises his upper body, and stretches out his right hand, saying, "I will see the face of the son I have longed for for so long! May my son be capable! May he not be incapable! May he do my work! May he repay my nurturing! May he use my wealth! May my lineage last long! Even after we have passed away and died, may he give alms and make merit for us, whether much or little, and dedicate the merit to where we are born and go!" Thus, he speaks words of joy. Then, having recognized that conception has occurred, in order to perform the rites for nurturing the fetus, she is placed on top of a fine mansion, and when it is cold, she is given cold remedies, and when it is hot, she is given hot remedies, and the foods prescribed by the doctor, not too

and those that are not too sour, and those that are not too salty, and those that are not too sweet, and those that are not too spicy, and those that are not too astringent. She attended to foods without sour, salty, sweet, spicy, and astringent tastes, and covered her body with necklaces and silks. Like a goddess wandering in a delightful grove, she moved from throne to throne and from small seat to small seat, not descending to the ground below, and she made sure not to hear any unpleasant sounds. Then, after eight or nine months, she gave birth to a son, a boy who was handsome, pleasing to look at, and beautiful, endowed with all limbs and organs. They held a birth celebration for him and named him Gaṅgāpa (Gঙ্গাপ, Gaṅgāpa, Son of the Ganges). Then, the boy Gaṅgāpa was entrusted to eight nurses: two to nurture him on their laps, two to nurse him, two to wash away impurities, and two to play with him. These eight nurses raised him with milk, yogurt, butter, ghee, the essence of ghee, and all sorts of other excellent provisions, so that he grew vigorously like a lotus in a lake. He possessed roots of virtue that were in accordance with the aspect of definitely distinguishing, and he was unhappy staying at home. He prostrated at the feet of his parents and prayed, 'Father and Mother, please allow me to renounce and uphold the teachings of the Blessed One.' But because he was their only son, they did not grant it. Then, Gaṅgāpa had the thought: 'Obtaining a human birth is difficult to obtain. The appearance of a Tathagata is also difficult to encounter. Furthermore, having complete faculties is also difficult to obtain. What means do I have to renounce and uphold the teachings of the Blessed One?' Then he thought to himself, 'I should make aspirations and end my life, so that I may obtain a human birth and quickly renounce.' Having thought in this way, even though he drank poison, he did not die. Even though he jumped into the fire, he did not die. Even though he jumped from a cliff, he did not die. Even though he jumped into a swirling river, he did not die.
