By fully relying on and cultivating Śamatha and Vipaśyanā, and increasing them, one will attain liberation by relying on Śamatha. Venerable Ānanda, the noble Śrāvaka who has fully cultivated Śamatha and Vipaśyanā, whose mind is endowed with hearing, will attain liberation through the aspect of the dhātus. Venerable ones, what are the dhātus? Venerable Ānanda, what is the dhātu of abandonment, what is the dhātu of detachment, and what is the dhātu of cessation? Venerable ones, what is abandoned is called the dhātu of abandonment. What is detached from is called the dhātu of detachment. What ceases is called the dhātu of cessation. Venerable Ānanda, abandoning all formations is called the dhātu of abandonment. Detachment from all formations is called the dhātu of detachment. The cessation of all formations is called the dhātu of cessation. Then, Venerable Ānanda, the five hundred bhikṣus rejoiced and applauded the words spoken, and went to where the Blessed One was. Having arrived, they bowed their heads at the feet of the Blessed One and sat down on one side. Having sat down on one side, Venerable Ānanda said to the Blessed One: Venerable sir, what dharmas should a bhikṣu dwelling in a solitary place, at the foot of a tree, or in an empty house, constantly keep in mind? Ānanda, a bhikṣu dwelling in a solitary place, at the foot of a tree, or in an empty house, should constantly keep in mind two dharmas: Śamatha and Vipaśyanā. Venerable sir, by fully relying on and cultivating Śamatha, and increasing it, what benefit will be experienced? Ananda, what is the realm of abandonment? What is the realm of detachment? What is the realm of cessation? Bhikshu, what is abandoned is called the realm of abandonment? What is detached from is called the realm of detachment? What ceases is called the realm of cessation? Ananda, abandoning all formations is called the realm of abandonment. Being detached from all formations is called the realm of detachment. The cessation of all formations is called the realm of cessation. Bhikshu, the teacher and the hearers are like this, with the excellence of words, just like this, the meaning and the meaning are consistent and the same, the words and the words are consistent and the same, the letters and the letters are consistent and the same, it is truly wonderful! What is the reason for that? Bhikshu, I went to an elderly elder bhikshu, even if I spoke this meaning to that elder bhikshu with these words and these letters, but just as the Bhagavan said, he answered me this meaning with these words and these letters. I praised and rejoiced in what that elder bhikshu said, and then I went to the five hundred bhikshus, even if I spoke this meaning to those five hundred bhikshus with these words and these letters, but they also answered me this meaning with these words and these letters, just as the Bhagavan is saying now. Bhikshu, the teacher and the hearers are like this, with the excellence of words, just like this, the meaning and the meaning are consistent and the same, the words and the words are consistent and the same, the letters and the letters are consistent and the same, it is truly wonderful! The Bhagavan said: Ananda, do you know who that elderly bhikshu is? He replied: Venerable, that elderly bhikshu is an Arhat, one who has exhausted the outflows, has done what should be done, has accomplished what needs to be accomplished, has laid down the burden, has attained his own benefit, has completely extinguished existence, and whose mind is completely liberated by correct wisdom. All of those five hundred bhikshus are also Arhats, outflows
