If it is thought that it will appear on the face, then it will not appear. If it is thought that it will be prophesied as Pratyekabuddha enlightenment, then it will not appear in the hair between the eyebrows. If it is thought that it will be prophesied as unsurpassed perfect complete enlightenment, then it will not appear on the crown of the head. Then, those rays of light circumambulated the Blessed One three times, and disappeared from the hair between the eyebrows of the Blessed One. Then, the venerable Ananda, with his palms joined, asked the Blessed One: "Various lights interwoven with a thousand colors, have emerged from the door of your mouth, illuminating all directions, just like the rising sun." He also spoke in verses: "The Buddha, who is free from noise, does not delight in satiety, and has abandoned it, is the sacred source of beings. The victorious conquerors of enemies do not show a smile like the root of a lotus and the color of a conch shell without cause or condition. Because you, with your steadfast wisdom, know that the time has come, please, for the sake of the monks, kings, and listeners who seek the truth, dispel the doubts in the hearts of the virtuous with your supreme words. The protectors, the perfect Buddhas, who are as steadfast as the ocean and the king of mountains, do not smile without reason. For what reason, O hero, do you show a smile? Please tell us, most people are listening." The Blessed One said: "Ananda, it is indeed so. It is indeed so, Ananda, the Tathagatas, Arhats, Perfect Buddhas do not smile without cause or condition. Ananda, did you see this householder showing such respect to me?" "Venerable one, I saw it." "Ananda, this householder, through the roots of virtue, the generation of the mind, and the complete giving of the Dharma of generosity, will become a Pratyekabuddha named Cool Light. His Dharma of generosity is this: that he has generated faith in me. Monks, therefore you should train yourselves in this way: to respect the Buddha, the Pratyekabuddha, and the Shravakas. Monks, you should train yourselves in this way." After the Blessed One had spoken thus, the monks.

Those rejoiced and praised the words spoken by the Blessed One. The so-called "ferrymen" are: kings, great ministers, wealthy people, palace attendants, merchants, ship captains, gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas all revered the Buddha, the Blessed One, as their teacher, made images of him, and offered him worship. The Buddha, the Blessed One, who was offered to and known by gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas, possessed great merit and had obtained robes, food, bedding, seats, medicine, and other necessities. Together with the monastic community of hearers, he traveled through the country of Magadha and arrived at the bank of the Ganges River. Then, the Blessed One, attended by the community of monks, with the community of monks leading the way, went to where the ferrymen were, and upon arriving, said to the ferrymen, "Hey, please ferry me across this river!" The ferrymen replied, "Please pay the boat fare!" Then, the Blessed One said to those ferrymen, "I too have been a ferryman in the past. I rescued Nanda from the river of desire, rescued Angulimala from the ocean of hatred, rescued the arrogant son of the Brahmin from the ocean of arrogance, and rescued Star Increasing Light Protector from the ocean of ignorance, but I did not charge a boat fare." Even though the Blessed One spoke thus, they did not agree to ferry him across. Then, one of the ferrymen heard the Blessed One's words, which possessed eight qualities of excellent speech, and also saw his perfect form, and generated faith, saying, "I shall ferry the Blessed One and the community of hearers across the river." Then, as the monks boarded the boat, the Blessed One, through his miraculous power, arrived at the opposite shore even faster than those ferrymen. Then, that ferryman saw that miraculous display of power.
