Also. Practicing diligently, after completely severing the cycle of rebirth, one will be able to exhaust suffering. Thus it is said. Then those rays of light circled the three thousand great thousand worlds, following after the Blessed One. If the Blessed One wished to prophesy past deeds, they would not appear on the side of the Blessed One's robe. If he wished to prophesy future deeds, they would not appear in front. If he wished to prophesy that beings would be born in hell, they would not appear on the soles of his feet. If he wished to prophesy that they would be born as animals, they would not appear on the heels of his feet. If he wished to prophesy that they would be born as hungry ghosts, they would not appear on his big toes. If he wished to prophesy that they would be born as humans, they would not appear on his two knees. If he wished to prophesy that they would become powerful wheel-turning kings, they would not appear on the palm of his left hand. If he wished to prophesy that they would become wheel-turning kings, they would not appear on the palm of his right hand. If he wished to prophesy that they would be born in the heavens, they would not appear on his navel. If he wished to prophesy that they would attain the enlightenment of a Hearer, they would not appear on his face. If he wished to prophesy that they would attain the enlightenment of a Solitary Buddha, they would not appear on the hair between his eyebrows. If he wished to prophesy that they would attain unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, they would not appear on the crown of his head. Then those rays of light circled the Blessed One three times, and disappeared into the hair between the Blessed One's eyebrows. Then the Venerable Ananda, with his palms joined, asked the Blessed One: "Various lights interwoven with a thousand colors, many have come forth from the door of your mouth, they illuminate all directions, just as the rising sun does." Again, he asked in verse: "Free from frivolity, not delighting in greed, having abandoned it, the Buddha is the supreme cause for beings, the victorious one, the subduer of enemies, without cause or condition, does not show a smile like the root of a lotus or the color of a conch shell.

If your wisdom knows the times, then to the ascetics, kings, and those seeking solitude, I pray that the supreme teachings of the Buddha, the lion of the Shakyas, may be firm, and that the good may dispel the doubts that have arisen. Like the ocean and the king of mountains, the protectors, the fully enlightened Buddhas, do not usually show a smile. For what reason do you, the hero, show a smile? For this reason, please tell us, the majority of listeners! The Blessed One said: Ananda, it is so. It is so, Ananda, the Tathagatas, Arhats, perfectly enlightened ones, do not smile without a reason. Ananda, have you seen the respect this merchant has shown me? Venerable One, I have seen it. Ananda, this merchant, through the roots of virtue, generating the mind of enlightenment, and completely giving away the Dharma of giving, will become a Pratyekabuddha named Tranquil Light. The Dharma of giving that he has given is this act of making my mind very joyful. Monks, therefore, you should train like this: We should respect the Buddha, the Pratyekabuddha, and the Shravakas. Monks, you should train like this. After the Blessed One spoke thus, the monks rejoiced and praised the words spoken by the Blessed One. The Hundred Parables of the Wise and the Foolish, and so forth, the seventh fascicle, called "Light and Cool": Kings, great ministers, wealthy people, palace attendants, merchants, captains, gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas all revered the Buddha, the Blessed One, as their teacher, painted images of him, and made offerings. The gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas, who offered to and knew the Buddha, the Blessed One, possessed great merit and obtained robes, food, bedding, cushions, medicine, and medical supplies, and together with the Sangha of Shravaka monks, were always in Shravasti.

In the Jeta Grove of Prince Jeta in the country of Pāṇa, the monastery of Anāthapiṇḍada was located. At that time, in Śrāvastī, there was a wealthy householder, rich in possessions, enjoying great abundance, with vast and extensive holdings, possessing wealth comparable to that of Vaiśravaṇa, and rivaling Vaiśravaṇa's wealth. He was faithful, virtuous, and of good mind, engaging in benefiting himself and others, greatly compassionate, of noble character, desiring the Dharma, and loving towards beings. Then, he thought to himself: "These enjoyments are of the nature of the moon in water, wavering like an elephant's ear, impermanent, unstable, not lasting, unreliable, subject to change, and coexisting with the five great harms. I must take essence from these meaningless enjoyments." When the summer season arrived, he invited the Blessed One, together with the assembly of Śrāvakas, for a meal. He cleaned his house, removing stones, gravel, and shards, sprinkled it with sandalwood water, arranged various incense burners, burned fragrant incense, scattered various flowers, and prepared flower cushions. Then, he prepared cool drinks, food, and offerings. He sent a message urging the Blessed One to come for the meal, saying, "Venerable One, the time for the meal has arrived. The Blessed One deems it is time, please come!" Then, the Blessed One, in the morning, having put on his lower garment and Dharma robes, took his bowl and, attended by the assembly of monks, with the monastic community clearing the way, went to the house of that householder, and upon arriving, sat on the seat prepared for the monastic community. Then, that householder, seeing that the Buddha and the monastic community were seated comfortably, personally satisfied them with clean and excellent food and drink, according to their needs. He personally satisfied them with clean and excellent food and drink of various kinds, according to their needs. When the Blessed One had finished the meal, he put down his bowl and washed his hands.
