of nature. It exists in common with the five great harms. I should satisfy the Buddha Bhagavan and the Sangha of Hearers with good food and perform a ritual bath for them. Then, he invited the Bhagavan and the Sangha of Hearers to come for bathing and receiving offerings. In order to benefit him, the Bhagavan and the Sangha of Hearers, attended by the assembly of monks, led by the Sangha of monks, went to the place of ritual bathing. Then, that merchant took sesame oil and spices to the bathhouse and personally served the Bhagavan and the Sangha of Hearers. When the Bhagavan and the Sangha of Hearers had finished bathing, that householder personally satisfied the Bhagavan and the Sangha of Hearers with clean and good food, and offered them as they wished. After personally satisfying them with various kinds of clean and good food and offering them as they wished, when he knew that the Bhagavan had finished his meal, the bowl had been put away, and his hands had been washed, he took a very low seat and sat in front of the Bhagavan to listen to the Dharma, and the Bhagavan truly revealed it to him with the words of the Dharma, made him truly understand, truly praised him, and made him truly rejoice. After truly revealing it with various words of the Dharma, making him truly understand, truly praising him, and making him truly rejoice, he remained silent. Then, that merchant gained faith, and like a tree being uprooted, he bowed his head at the feet of the Bhagavan, and his heart was filled with joy. Then, the Bhagavan smiled. This is the rule of the Buddhas Bhagavan smiling, at that time, blue, yellow, red, and white rays of light came from his mouth, some of which shone downwards, and some of which shone upwards. Those rays of light that shone downwards shone on the sentient beings in hell, namely the Hell of Revival, the Hell of Black Rope, the Hell of Combination, the Hell of Weeping, and the Hell of Great Weeping.

Extreme cold, heat, extreme heat, uninterrupted, with blisters, blisters bursting, shivering, squeaking, ah-choo sound, cracking like an Utpala flower, cracking like a lotus, becoming like a large lotus cracking open. In those hells of sentient beings that belong to the hot hells, it becomes cool and flows. In those hells of sentient beings that belong to the cold hells, it becomes warm and flows. Thus, the differences in suffering of those sentient beings are pacified. Then, those sentient beings think like this: 'Alas, have we died and transmigrated from here? Or have we been reborn elsewhere?' Then, in order to generate faith in them, the Bhagavan manifests emanations. Seeing the emanations, they think like this: 'Alas, we have neither died and transmigrated from here, nor have we been reborn elsewhere, yet by the power of this unprecedented appearance of sentient beings, the differences in our suffering have been pacified.' Then, they develop great joy in the emanations, and thus, the karma of experiencing the suffering of hell is exhausted, and they take rebirth among gods and humans, in those places that are fit to be vessels of truth. Those who go upwards are the retinues of the Four Great Kings, the Thirty-three, the Free from Strife, the Joyful, the Delighting in Emanation, the Controlling Others' Emanations, the retinues of Brahma, the Attendants of Brahma, the Great Brahma, the Minor Light, the Immeasurable Light, the Clear Light, the Minor Virtue, the Immeasurable Virtue, the Universal Virtue, the Cloudless, the Merit-born, the Great Fruit, the Non-great, the Non-afflicted, the Manifestly Serene, the Highly Visible, and reaching up to the gods of Akanistha, they proclaim the sound of impermanence, suffering, emptiness, and selflessness. Two verses are also recited: Strive for definite emergence. Engage in the Buddha's teaching. Like an elephant destroying a reed house, destroy the army of the Lord of Death.
