Now, the officials and, the gods and, the nagas and, the yakshas and, the asuras and, the garudas and, the kinnaras and, the mahoragas all honored, respected, depicted, and offered to the Blessed One, the Buddha, who was endowed with great merit, and who had obtained robes, food, bedding, cushions, medicine, and medical supplies. Together with the monastic community of shravakas, he resided in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove of Anathapindika's Garden. At that time, in Shravasti, there lived a wealthy merchant, rich in possessions, with great enjoyment, vast and extensive, possessing the wealth of Vaishravana, rivaling the wealth of Vaishravana. He took a wife from the same lineage, and together with her, he played and rejoiced, living happily. Although he played and rejoiced, living happily, he had neither a son nor a daughter. Then, he clasped his hands together and thought: 'Although I am endowed with countless possessions, I have neither a son nor a daughter. After I die, because there is no son, all my possessions will be seized by the king.' His heart was filled with worry. Then, the shramanas and, the brahmins and, the diviners and, the friends and, the relatives and, other kinsmen all advised him, saying: 'Pray to the gods!' In the world, there is also the saying that sons and daughters are born through prayer, but that is not the case. If sons and daughters could be born through prayer, then like a Chakravartin king, each person would have thousands upon thousands of sons. In reality, the birth of sons and daughters is the result of the convergence of three conditions. Which three? The coming together of the father and mother with aroused desire, the mother being in her fertile period and having menstruation, and the arrival of a gandharva. It is from the convergence of these three conditions that sons and daughters are born. However, the shramanas and, the brahmins and, the diviners and, the friends and, the relatives and,

After those branches marked it, because she had no children and wanted children, she prayed to Gulang, the water god, Kubera, Indra, Brahma, and other gods. For example, she prayed to the gods of the pleasure garden, the gods of the forest, the gods of the crossroads, the gods of the three-way intersections, the gods who receive tormas, the gods who are born together, the gods who are in accordance with the Dharma, and the gods who always follow behind, and she was also devoted to praying. A certain sentient being also died from a category of sentient beings and was reborn in the womb of that wife. Some women with wise natures have five uncommon qualities. What are the five? They know when a man is conceived and when he is not conceived; they know the time and they know the menstruation; they know when a child is conceived and they know from what a child is conceived; they know if it is a boy and they know if it is a girl. If it is a boy, it relies on and dwells in the right side of the abdomen. If it is a girl, it relies on and dwells in the left side of the abdomen. Then she was very happy and told the householder, 'Master, I am pregnant, and because it dwells in my right abdomen, it must be a boy, please be happy!' She was also very happy, raised her upper body, and stretched out her right hand, saying, 'I will see the face of the son I have longed for for a long time. May my son be capable! Do not be incompetent! May he do my work! May he raise me in return for the kindness of raising me! May he enjoy the wealth! May my family line continue for a long time! After we pass away, may he also give alms and do good deeds for us, no matter how much or how little, and dedicate it, saying, 'May these two go wherever they are born!' She spoke joyful words. Knowing that she was pregnant, in order to perform the rituals for raising the child, she was placed on top of a high building, with cold utensils when it was cold, hot utensils when it was hot, and the food prescribed by the doctor, not too spicy, not too sour, not too salty,

Those that are not very sweet, those that are not very spicy, and those that are not very astringent, that is, partaking of foods without bitterness, sourness, saltiness, sweetness, spiciness, and astringency. Adorning the body with necklaces and silks, like a celestial maiden wandering in a garden of delight, moving from couch to couch, and from low couch to low couch, without descending to the ground below, and ensuring that no unpleasant sounds are heard. After eight or nine months, a son was born. The boy was born with a fine appearance, pleasing to behold and beautiful. At the time of his birth, the whole family rejoiced and held a birth celebration. They discussed what name should be given to the boy. The relatives said, "At the time of his birth, the whole family rejoiced, therefore, this boy should be named 'Joyful'." So he was named Joyful. Thereafter, the boy Joyful was cared for by two nurses who held him, two nurses who nursed him, two nurses who cleaned his impurities, and two nurses who played with him. He was entrusted to eight nurses, who nurtured him with milk, yogurt, butter, ghee, the essence of butter, and other excellent provisions, causing him to grow rapidly like a lotus in a lake. Then, when he grew up to be five or six years old, he became an extremely lazy person, unwilling to rise from his bed or cushion. Because he was sharp and clear-minded, he studied the scriptures while sitting at home. Then, the merchant thought to himself, "I pleased the gods and had a son once in a hundred attempts, but he has become extremely lazy, unwilling to rise from his bed or cushion. What is the use of such a son who is so weak and sits like a cripple all day long?" The merchant also delighted in the practice of completion, so he invited six non-Buddhist teachers to his home, thinking, "If this boy sees them, perhaps he will be inspired, even if only to get up." Then, the lazy boy
