Having made a firm resolution, the Blessed One Buddha, endowed with great merit, who is worshipped and known by gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas, having obtained robes, food, bedding, cushions, medicine, and medical supplies, together with the monastic community of shravakas, traveled through the country of Magadha and arrived at the bank of the Ganges River. At that time, not far from the bank of the Ganges River, there was a dilapidated stupa, destroyed by wind and sun, which the monks saw and reported to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, whose stupa is this?" The Blessed One replied: "It belongs to a Pratyekabuddha named Chandana." The monks asked: "Blessed One, how did the Pratyekabuddha Chandana come to be? How was the name given?" The Blessed One replied: "Monks, do you wish to hear how the Pratyekabuddha Chandana came to be and how the name was given?" They replied: "Venerable One, we wish to hear." The Blessed One said: "Monks, then listen well and keep it in mind, and I will tell you. Monks, in the past, in the city of Varanasi, there was a king named Brahma-datta who ruled. During his reign, the country was rich, prosperous, peaceful, and bountiful, filled with people and many inhabitants, disputes and battles were pacified, and there were no conflicts, civil wars, thieves, famines, or diseases, and it was abundant with rice, sugarcane, cattle, and buffalo. That king was also a righteous king, ruling according to the Dharma. He, being without a son, desired to have one, and so he prayed to Kuranga, the water god, Kubera, Indra, Brahma, and other various gods, such as the guardian deity of the monastery, the guardian deity of the forest, the guardian deity of the crossroads, the guardian deity of the three-way intersection, the guardian deity who receives tormas, the guardian deity born together, the guardian deity in accordance with the Dharma, and the guardian deities who always follow behind. In the world, also, because of the reason for praying,

Boys and girls will be born! Although there is such a saying, it is not so. If boys and girls are born through prayer, then like a Chakravarti king, each one would have a thousand sons. Indeed, boys and girls are born from the assembly of three conditions, so what are these three? The two parents are inflamed with desire and meet, the mother is in season and has menstruation, and a Gandharva arrives, it is from the assembly of these three conditions that boys and girls are born. Moreover, he was focused on praying, so in the pleasure garden there was a large pond, and from within it grew an extraordinarily large lotus, which grew larger day by day, but did not bloom. Then, the guardian of the Nandana Grove informed the king. Then, the king also ordered that the lotus be well protected. Later, one day at sunrise, the lotus bloomed, and in the heart of the lotus, there was a boy with a handsome appearance, beautiful, charming, with a good complexion, golden in color, his head like an umbrella, long arms, a wide forehead, a high nose, a beautiful nose, thick eyebrows, his body well adorned with the thirty-two major marks of a great man, beautified by the eighty minor marks, sitting in the lotus position. From his mouth came the fragrance of lotus, and from his body came the fragrance of sandalwood. Then, the guardian of the Nandana Grove also informed the king. Then, the king, together with his ministers and consorts, went to the pleasure garden. As soon as the boy saw the king, he said to the king: 'Father, please come here, I am your son, who you had no son.' Then, the king was pleased, satisfied, and rejoiced, saying: 'Child, it is as you say.' Then, the king entered the pond, took the boy from the heart of the lotus, and placed him in his hands. Then, wherever the boy placed his feet, lotuses appeared. Then, he was named Sandalwood. When the boy Sandalwood gradually grew up, the people of the city informed the king: 'O divine one, if a festival were to occur in our city,'

This is the reason for sending the sandalwood boy. However, we will enjoy the festival together, and all places will be decorated with lotuses. The king said: Let it be so. Then, Sandalwood adorned himself with all the ornaments, the sons of the ministers, with servants and attendants, making various kinds of music, came out of the king's palace in order to enjoy the city's festival. Then, as he went there, with each step, beautiful and captivating lotuses appeared. However, as soon as the sun's rays touched them, they withered and dried up. Then, a pure being, a virtuous thought, one who had planted virtuous roots with the Buddha in the past, saw these, and a proper thought arose in his mind. He thought: These lotuses are so beautiful when they first grow, but when scorched by the sun's rays, they wither and dry up, and this body is just like that. As he thought in this way and approached understanding, the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment manifested. He sat in the midst of the crowd and attained the enlightenment of a solitary Buddha. Then, after a while, the gods of the Pure Abode offered him colored clothes, and he distributed these clothes, ascended into the sky, and performed various kinds of miracles. Seeing these, the king, ministers, and people of the town gained great joy, and also planted various kinds of virtuous roots. The Blessed One said: Monks, the solitary Buddha Sandalwood arose in this way, and the name also came from this. The monks asked the Buddha Blessed One: Venerable One, what deeds did the solitary Buddha Sandalwood do and accumulate, so that his body is fragrant and his five senses are sharp? The Blessed One said: He went forth in the teaching of the Blessed One Light Protector, and there he offered perfumed water to the stupa of hair and nails, and also offered flowers, and there he also practiced the path of solitary Buddha enlightenment. Monks, therefore, one should learn in this way: to respect the teacher. To the lama
