held it. The other people around the palace held umbrellas for a thousand monks. Then, the Blessed One, surrounded by those who are tamed, was also tamed; surrounded by those who are peaceful, was also peaceful; surrounded by those who are liberated, was also liberated; surrounded by those who have passed beyond, was also passed beyond; surrounded by those who are purified, was also purified; surrounded by those who have become Arhats, was also become an Arhat; surrounded by those who are free from desire, was also free from desire; surrounded by those who are beautiful, was also beautiful. Like a bull king surrounded by a herd of excellent cattle, like an elephant surrounded by a herd of elephant calves, like a lion surrounded by a herd of wild animals, like a swan king surrounded by a flock of swans, like the sky surrounded by a flock of birds, like a skilled doctor surrounded by a crowd of patients, like a hero surrounded by a crowd of soldiers, like a land surveyor surrounded by a crowd of travelers, like a captain surrounded by a crowd of merchants, like a merchant surrounded by the people of the city, like a minor king surrounded by a crowd of ministers, like a wheel-turning king surrounded by a crowd of a thousand sons, like the moon surrounded by a crowd of stars, like the sun surrounded by a crowd of a thousand rays, like Vaishravana surrounded by a crowd of Gandharvas, like Pūrṇabhadra surrounded by a crowd of vases, like Manibhadra surrounded by a crowd of Nagas, like Kubera surrounded by a crowd of Yakshas, like a garlanded Asura surrounded by a crowd, like Indra surrounded by a crowd of the thirty-three gods, like Brahma surrounded by Brahma's retinue, sitting as still as the ocean, like a moist cloud, like an elephant king without fat, with his senses extremely subdued, his conduct not disordered, adorned with many unmixed Buddha's teachings, the Blessed One went to that city. When the Blessed One's feet were placed on the threshold of the door, this great earth shook in six ways, and when the Blessed One entered the city, it was wonderful!

Such miracles occurred. Furthermore, like this, narrow doors became wide. Low places became high. Elephants also made sounds. Horses also made sounds. Herds of cattle also made sounds. Various kinds of musical instruments, placed in every household, also emitted their own sounds. The blind were able to see with their eyes. The deaf were able to hear with their ears. The mute were able to speak. Those with incomplete faculties obtained complete faculties. Drunkards became sober. Those who had taken poison became free from poison. Those who harbored animosity towards each other obtained loving-kindness. Pregnant women gave birth safely. Those who were imprisoned were freed. Those without wealth found wealth. Gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas residing in the sky also showered down rains of divine flowers. Then, the Blessed One, with such splendor, proceeded to the king's palace. King Bimbisara himself took a hand towel and, at the outer gatehouse, carried water made of the finest sandalwood powder for washing the feet of the Blessed One and the sangha of monks. Then, knowing that the Buddha and the sangha of monks were comfortably seated, he offered food with a hundred flavors. After offering the food, he also offered garments from Kashi. Because of this, the people of the Magadha palace retinue developed faith. Then, the monks became doubtful and asked the Buddha, the Blessed One, who cuts off all doubts: Venerable one, by what roots of virtue did the Blessed One and the sangha of monks obtain such offerings, and where did the Blessed One perform these roots of virtue? The Blessed One replied: Monks, the Tathagata himself, in other past lives, accumulated merit and possessed complete conditions. Just like crossing a difficult ford, having done and accumulated those deeds that will inevitably occur and cannot be prevented, who else but myself can experience those deeds that I have done and accumulated?
