Did. Monks, therefore, you should train yourselves thus: We shall respect the Teacher, regard him as our master, regard him as our model, and make offerings to him. Having respected the Teacher, regarded him as our master, regarded him as our model, and made offerings to him, we shall dwell in dependence. Monks, you should train yourselves in this way. After the Blessed One had spoken thus, the monks rejoiced and highly praised what the Blessed One had said. The pillar refers to the fact that kings, great ministers, wealthy people, palace attendants, merchants, and navigators, as well as gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas, respected the Buddha, the Blessed One, regarded him as their master, regarded him as their model, and made offerings to him. The Buddha, the Blessed One, who was worshipped and known by gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas, possessed great merit and had obtained robes, food, bedding, seats, medicines, and medical supplies. Accompanied by the Sangha of Hearers, he traveled through the land of Kuru and went to the city of Kuru. The people of Kuru, too, were to be tamed by the Buddha, possessed a vast mind, and were utterly desirous of giving. Then the Blessed One thought: I should summon Indra, the lord of the gods, surrounded by his retinue of gods. However, seeing him would increase the merit of these people. Then the Blessed One generated a worldly thought: Alas, if Indra, the lord of the gods, served by the assembly of gods, would bring a pillar of excellent sandalwood and come, how wonderful that would be! As soon as he generated this thought, Indra, the lord of the gods, was served by the assembly of gods, wherever all the artisans, the four great kings, the gods, nagas, yakshas, gandharvas, and many kumbhandas were serving. They arrived carrying a pillar of excellent sandalwood, making a great noise and clamor, shouting "Ha! Ha!"

Having taken it out, a beautiful mansion was built with the excellent sandalwood ground for the sake of the Bhagavan. Then, in that mansion, the lord of the gods, Indra, with the Bhagavan and the Sangha of Shravakas, with divine food, divine bedding, cushions, divine incense, and garlands of flowers, paid homage, revered, honored, and made offerings. Then, when the assembly of the Kuru people saw those divine riches, they were greatly amazed and thought to themselves: 'Like this, since the gods, including Indra, are making offerings to the Bhagavan, it seems that the Bhagavan is the most supreme in the world.' Their minds became desirous, and they went to the Bhagavan, prostrated at the feet of the Bhagavan, and sat on one side. Having sat on one side, the assembly of the Kuru people felt great joy in that mansion. Then, the Bhagavan made that mansion disappear, and then taught such a Dharma that the four noble truths, which are endowed with impermanence, would be realized. Having heard that, some of the Kuru people attained the fruit of stream-entry, some attained the fruit of once-returning, some attained the fruit of non-returning, some abandoned all defilements and directly realized the state of Arhat, some generated the mind of Shravaka Bodhi, some generated the mind of Pratyekabuddha Bodhi, and some generated the mind of unsurpassed perfect complete Bodhi. All those retinues were established in taking refuge in the Buddha, relying on the Dharma, and relying on the Sangha. The monks, too, were delighted to see the offerings to the Buddha, and asked the Buddha Bhagavan: 'Bhagavan, where were these roots of virtue created?' The Bhagavan said: 'Monks, the Tathagata himself, in other past lives, accumulated merit and possessed the completed causes, and like breaking through a dam, they appeared. He did and accumulated deeds that would inevitably come to fruition, therefore the Tathagata received such offerings. Monks, do you wish to hear?'

Venerable One, please listen! Monks, in the past, there appeared in the world a Tathagata, an Arhat, a perfectly enlightened Buddha, endowed with knowledge and conduct, a Sugata, a world-knower, a guide for those who need to be tamed, a supreme being, a teacher of gods and humans, a Buddha, a Bhagavan, named Brahma. Then, the perfectly enlightened Buddha Brahma, attended by sixty-two thousand Arhats, traveled from place to place and arrived near a royal palace. A king, crowned from the head of the royal family, heard that the perfectly enlightened Buddha Brahma, attended by sixty-two thousand Arhats, had come to his kingdom from his travels. Having heard this, with the great wealth of the king and the great power of the king, he went to where the Bhagavan, the perfectly enlightened Buddha Brahma, was. Having arrived, he bowed his head at the feet of the perfectly enlightened Buddha Brahma and sat down on one side. Having sat down on one side, the king, crowned from the head of the royal family, paid close attention to the teachings by which the Bhagavan attained enlightenment. Then, the king became joyful and rose from his seat, draped his upper robe over one shoulder, and, with his palms joined together in reverence, addressed the Bhagavan as follows: "Venerable One, I would like to offer the Bhagavan robes, food, bedding, seats, medicine for the sick, and medical supplies. Would the Bhagavan grant permission to stay here near the royal palace for three months with the Sangha of disciples?" Then, the perfectly enlightened Buddha Brahma, without saying anything to the king, gave his consent. Then, the king, crowned from the head of the royal family, had a mansion built of excellent sandalwood for the sake of the Bhagavan. He adorned it with various kinds of robes and ornaments, scattered various flowers, fumigated it with incense burners, and offered it to the Bhagavan and the Sangha of disciples, providing food for three months.
