Giving. Kāśika and divine food. The so-called "Listeners" are those who revered, respected, admired, and made offerings to the Buddha Śākyamuni by kings, great ministers, wealthy people, palace attendants, merchants, captains, gods, nāgas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas. The Buddha Śākyamuni, who was revered and known by gods, nāgas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas, possessed great merit and had obtained robes, food, bedding, cushions, medicine, and medical supplies. Together with the Śrāvaka Sangha, he resided at the city of Listeners on the bank of the Ganges River. Then, those Listeners went to where the Blessed One was, and upon arriving, they bowed their heads at the feet of the Blessed One and sat down on one side. After sitting down on one side, the Blessed One taught those Listeners the Dharma, causing them to truly understand, truly uphold, truly praise, and truly rejoice. He taught them in many ways with the words of the Dharma, causing them to truly understand, truly uphold, truly praise, and truly rejoice, and then remained silent. Then, those Listeners rose from their seats, draped their upper garments over one shoulder, knelt on their right knees, and with palms joined, bowed towards the Blessed One and said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, together with the Bhikshu Sangha, would you please accept our invitation to have a meal at our place tomorrow on the bank of the Ganges River? We also wish to cross the bridge." After they had spoken thus, the Blessed One remained silent to the Listeners, indicating his acceptance. Then, those Listeners cleared the bank of the Ganges River, making it free of stones, gravel, and pebbles, raised victory banners and flags, scattered various flowers, offered incense from incense burners, arranged delicious food, and prepared many flowers.

Having decorated with the houses of Vog, the messenger urged the Bhagavan to cover with an umbrella. The monks reported, "The time for the umbrella has arrived, and the alms are ready." The Bhagavan, thinking that the time had come, agreed to go. Then, the Bhagavan, attended by the assembly of monks, with the monastic community of monks leading the way, went to a place called Min, and upon arriving, sat on a seat prepared in the midst of the monastic community of monks. Then, the people of Min, knowing that the Buddha and the monastic community of monks were seated comfortably, satisfied them with clean and excellent food from their own hands, and offered them whatever they wished. Having satisfied them with various kinds of clean and excellent food from their own hands, and offered them whatever they wished, the Bhagavan finished the meal, washed the bowl, and knowing that the Buddha had washed his hands, they took very low cushions and sat before the Bhagavan in order to listen to the Dharma. Then, the Bhagavan understood the thoughts, habits, faculties, and nature of those people of Min, and taught the Dharma that would lead to the realization of the Four Noble Truths. Having heard this Dharma, many people of Min attained the fruit of stream-entry. Some attained the fruit of once-returning. Some attained the fruit of non-returning. Some abandoned all defilements and directly realized the state of an Arhat. Some generated the mind of a Hearer Bodhi. Some generated the mind of a Solitary Buddha Bodhi. Some generated the mind of Unsurpassed Perfect and Complete Bodhi. All those retinues were established in taking refuge in the Buddha, taking refuge in the Dharma, and taking refuge in the Sangha. Then, those people of Min, with great respect and offerings, escorted the Bhagavan and the monastic community of monks across the bridge. The monks also rejoiced upon seeing the offerings to the Buddha, and asked the Buddha Bhagavan, "Bhagavan, where were these roots of virtue performed?" The Bhagavan replied, "Monks, the Tathagata himself, in other past lives,

Having gathered resources and possessing favorable conditions, like a rushing torrent, deeds that do not involve being consumed by ghosts and spirits have been done and accumulated. Therefore, such offerings have been made to the Tathagata. Monks, do you wish to listen? Blessed One, we wish to listen. Monks, in the past, in a bygone era, a Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened Buddha, endowed with knowledge and conduct, Sugata, Knower of the World, Tamer of Beings, Supreme Being, Teacher of Gods and Humans, Buddha, Blessed One, named Carriage of Fortune, appeared in the world. He was attended by sixty-two thousand Arhats, traveling through various regions, and arrived at the bank of the Ganges. At that time, a ferryman with hundreds of attendants was ferrying passengers across the Ganges. There was also great fear of thieves in that area. Then, the ferryman saw the Perfectly Awakened Buddha, Carriage of Fortune, attended by sixty-two thousand Arhats. Upon seeing this, his mind was filled with joy. With a joyful mind, he said to the Blessed One: I wish to ferry the Blessed One first. The Perfectly Awakened Buddha, Carriage of Fortune, did not say anything to the ferryman but granted his request. Then, that ferryman, with great wealth, ferried the Perfectly Awakened Buddha, Carriage of Fortune, attended by sixty-two thousand Arhats, using a boat bridge, and satisfied them with delicious food. Then, he made the aspiration to attain unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. The Blessed One said: Monks, what do you think? At that time, the one who was the ferryman was none other than myself. Due to the ripening of the deeds of ferrying the Perfectly Awakened Buddha, Carriage of Fortune, attended by sixty-two thousand Arhats, using a boat bridge, satisfying them with delicious food, and making aspirations, I experienced immeasurable great bliss in samsara. And now, even when I have attained unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, there are such offerings.
