Then he went to see King Sālavā, praising him, "May you be victorious, may you live long!" and said, "God, why are you so unhappy? My lord, no matter how much is needed, in order to make the god happy, I will offer that much gold to the god." Then, he piled up a large amount of gold, so much that even without a place to sit, one could not see a place to stand, and even with a place to stand, one could not see a place to sit. Then, King Sālavā of Kosala sent many spies to his own country, telling them to listen to what people were saying. Soon, in the garden of Prince Winner, two old men were talking to each other, saying that there was a war strategy called "Lotus Stamen," which was to send the cowardly people to the front lines of the battlefield as cannon fodder, put the average people in the middle, and put the bravest people in the back. Then, they reported this to the king, and King Sālavā of Kosala, after hearing this, similarly prepared the four divisions of the army and marched to fight King Ajātasattu. Then, King Sālavā of Kosala seized all the elephant troops, cavalry, chariots, and infantry of King Ajātasattu, the son of Śarīraprabhā. King Ajātasattu, the son of Śarīraprabhā, was also defeated, he was afraid, depressed, completely defeated, turned his back on the enemy, and was captured alive. He was taken on a chariot and went to where the Blessed One was, and upon arriving, he bowed his head to the feet of the Blessed One and sat to one side. After sitting to one side, King Sālavā of Kosala said to the Blessed One, "Venerable One, King Ajātasattu has long regarded me as an enemy and has been hostile to me. But he is, after all, the son of my friend, so I cannot kill him, I should release him." The Blessed One also said, "Great King, release him!" At that time, the Blessed One spoke in verses:

Victory breeds hatred, defeat breeds suffering. Having abandoned both victory and defeat, one dwells in peace and happiness. Then, King Prasenajit of Kosala thought to himself: "My regaining the kingdom is all thanks to this merchant. I should find an opportunity to give him any reward he desires." Then, King Prasenajit of Kosala sought an opportunity to give the merchant any reward he desired. The merchant said: "I desire any reward that pleases me. Please grant me the kingdom for seven days, during which I can do as I please." Then, King Prasenajit of Kosala proclaimed throughout all my lands: "My kingdom is given to the merchant for seven days." After a while, the merchant invited all the monastic community of monks, including the Buddha, and King Prasenajit with his retinue, to a feast for seven days. He also sent messengers to all the people gathered in the lands of Kashi and Kosala, saying: "For seven days, you may be free from all taxes, enjoy yourselves as you please, and dwell in happiness. Also, come here and take refuge in the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. Also, attend my feast and make offerings to the Tathagata." Then, he offered great reverence to the Blessed One and the monastic community of Shravakas for seven days. He also placed hundreds of thousands of people in happiness. After seven days, he prostrated at the feet of the Blessed One, filled his mind with joy, and made the aspiration: "By this root of virtue, bodhicitta, and the act of giving, may I become a Buddha who guides the blind world without a guide, completely without a guide, liberates beings who have not been liberated, releases beings who have not been released, gives breath to beings who have not been given breath, and leads beings who have not completely passed beyond suffering to completely pass beyond suffering." Then, the Blessed One, knowing the merchant's causes passing from one life to another, and the karmas passing from one action to another, smiled. This is the way of the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones...

When my life comes to an end, the Dharma nature manifests with a smile. At that time, blue, yellow, red, and white rays of light emanate from my face, some of which go downwards, and some go upwards. The rays that go downwards fall into the hells of sentient beings, such as the Reviving Hell, the Black Line Hell, the Crushing Hell, the Howling Hell, the Great Howling Hell, the Hot Hell, the Extremely Hot Hell, the Uninterrupted Hell, the Blistering Hell, the Bursting Blister Hell, the Gnashing Teeth Hell, the Kyihud Hell, the Achuchu Hell, the Hell where it cracks like an Utpala flower, the Hell where it cracks like a Lotus flower, and the Hell where it cracks like a Great Lotus. In those hot hells, the light becomes cool and descends like water. In those cold hells, the light becomes warm and descends like water. Thus, the suffering of those sentient beings is alleviated. Then, they think: 'Have we died and transmigrated from here? Or have we been reborn elsewhere?' Then, in order to generate faith in them, the Bhagavan manifests emanations. When they see the emanations, they think: 'We have not died and transmigrated from here, nor have we been reborn elsewhere, but due to the power of this unprecedented sentient being's appearance, our suffering has been alleviated.' Then, they develop great joy towards the emanations, and thus, the karma that would cause them to experience the suffering of hell is exhausted, and among gods and humans, they will take rebirth in a place suitable to become vessels of truth. The rays that go upwards reach the realms of the Four Great Kings, the Thirty-three Gods, the Free from Strife, the Joyful, the Enjoying Emanations, the Controlling Others' Emanations, the Brahma Host, the Retinue of Brahma, the Great Brahma, the Minor Light, the Immeasurable Light, the Clear Light, the Minor Virtue, the Immeasurable Virtue, the Universal Virtue, the Cloudless, the Born of Merit, the Great Fruit, the No Affliction, the No Heat, the Well-Appearing, the Clear-Seeing, up to the gods of Akanistha.
