We temporarily couldn't find any other meat, so we found the corpse of a deceased young child, and used it to cook and serve. The king found out about it. The king ordered, "This meat is especially delicious, from now on, always prepare meat like this." The cook then reported, "Before, I found the corpse of a deceased young child and used it to cook, but now there is none." The king also ordered, "From now on, you must secretly and without others noticing, find it. I have the authority." The cook, following the king's orders, secretly stole and killed children at night, and every day thereafter, cooked them into dishes. At that time, most of the people in that city were wailing, proclaiming to each other that their children were missing. The ministers gathered and discussed why this was happening. They lit torches at the crossroads at night and saw the king's cook stealing and carrying away the young children. They caught him, tied him up, and brought him before the king, reporting that so many children had been lost one after another. The king remained silent. Even after they reported this three times, the king did not speak. They said, "Now we have caught him doing wrong. If he has committed a crime, he should be punished. What does it mean to remain silent?" The king said, "It was I who gave the order." Thereafter, the ministers were unhappy, held a grudge, and went their separate ways. After going outside, they said to each other, "The king is the enemy who has eaten all of our children. We cannot rule the country together with a flesh-eating king. We must eliminate this harmful enemy." They all agreed to kill the king. Outside that city, there was a garden with a pond where the king went to bathe every day. The ministers hid an army inside the garden, and when the king was bathing in the pond, the army surrounded and captured him, and killed him. That king...

Then he made this statement to the assembly of the army. Why have you surrounded me and come to capture me? The ministers made this statement to the king. A king is supposed to nurture many subjects. However, the king devoured all the sons of the subjects, causing all the subjects to become homeless and unbearable in suffering, so now we will kill you, the king. The king said: I am indeed guilty of doing this, but from now on I will not do this again. Is it possible to spare me this time? The ministers said to him: Even if black snow falls from the sky, or a black snake grows on your head, you will not be spared, so do not speak anymore! The lame king, hearing the words of the ministers, thought: Now I cannot escape being devoured by demons, I am going to die. So he said again to the ministers: Now that you are determined to kill me, please allow me a moment of peace, and then kill me immediately. After that, the ministers paused for a moment to let him calm down. That king made a vow in his heart: By the power of all the good deeds I have done in the past, ruling as king according to the Dharma, and all the merit of giving to ascetics, may I become a Rakshasa who can fly in the sky. After he made this vow and said it, he immediately transformed into a Rakshasa, rose into the sky above, and said to the ministers: Even if you combine your strength to kill me, my merit will allow me to be resurrected. From now on, you must endure my revenge! I will eat all your miserable and poor wives and children. Having said that, he flew to the mountain, and from then on he no longer ate people. Many people were also frightened by this and always fled and hid. After that, the Rakshasa began to eat people, gathered more and more Rakshasas, and the retinue and servants also became numerous. The retinue of the Rakshasa pleaded to the lame Rakshasa: We have become your retinue and servants, please grant us a grand feast. The lame Rakshasa also granted them this, and then killed five hundred kings,

They discussed holding a feast, and going, going, they captured a king and put him in a cave. They found four hundred and ninety-nine, lacking one king. Those kings in the cave said to each other: We are now pitiable, and there is no one to become our protector. If Sutasoma, the powerful one, were to come here, we might be liberated. Therefore, let us pray to the Rakshasa to bring Sutasoma here. After discussing, they prayed to the Rakshasa king, saying: King, if you are to hold a feast, merely killing human kings to make a feast will not make the feast good. The one named Sutasoma possesses great merit. If he is found, then the feast will become grand. After praying like this, the Rakshasa king said: This is very good. Then he flew into the sky to capture Sutasoma. At that time, Sutasoma, with a young daughter, was going outside the city to bathe. On the way, she met a begging Brahmin, gave alms, and said to the Brahmin: I am going to bathe. I will give alms when I return. Having said this, she went to bathe. While she was bathing, the Rakshasa king came and took her to the cave. At that time, Sutasoma was unhappy, crying and kicking her feet, saying: You are superior to others in possessing merit, you are the most excellent. A great man is certainly not afraid. Why are you unhappy, crying like a small child? Sutasoma said to the Rakshasa: I am not attached to my body, nor am I unhappy because of fear of the Rakshasa. I have never lied from the beginning. How can I lie now? On the way to bathe, I met a begging Brahmin, and I said that I would bathe and return to give alms. Having said this, I went to bathe, but you, King, brought me here. I thought I had lied, so I am unhappy. It is not that I am attached to my body and life. King, because you pity me, please grant me seven days of grace, so that I can give alms to that Brahmin and then return to die. After praying like this, the Rakshasa said: I will let you go now.
