Chapter Thirty-Six: The Chapter on Angulimala the Unafflicted Chapter Thirty-Six: The Chapter on Angulimala the Unafflicted Thus have I heard. Once, the Blessed One was dwelling at Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove, the Garden of Anathapindika. At that time, the minister of King Prasenajit was a great minister, wise and intelligent, and of great wealth. His wife, being with child, gave birth to a boy with auspicious marks, of excellent form, and of unparalleled beauty. They summoned a soothsayer to examine the child, and the soothsayer, with a joyful countenance, spoke thus: "This child is endowed with auspicious marks, surpassing all others in intelligence and wisdom." The child's father, hearing this, asked, "What name should we give the child?" The soothsayer asked, "Since this child was conceived, what wonders have occurred?" The minister said: "The mother of this child was formerly of a rough and unkind nature, but since conceiving this child, she has become exceedingly gentle and kind. She delights in praising the virtues and merits of others, and dislikes mentioning their faults. She is loving and compassionate towards those afflicted by suffering." The soothsayer said, "These are the virtues of the child! Let the child be named 'Unafflicted'." Thereafter, the child was raised and grew up, and his strength became immense, capable of withstanding a thousand men single-handedly. He could leap up and catch birds flying in the sky, and his speed was equal to that of a horse. Therefore, his parents were exceedingly fond of him. At that time, in that country, there was a Brahmin, learned and intelligent, widely learned in the scriptures. This Brahmin had about five hundred students who constantly followed him. At that time, the minister also took his son and entrusted him to the Brahmin for instruction. The boy Unafflicted was diligent in his studies, learning in one day more than others learned in a year. Before long, he had mastered and understood all the knowledge. His teacher, the Brahmin, also trusted him greatly, always accompanying him and dwelling with him, so that the other students also treated him with respect. At that time, the wife of the Brahmin teacher saw that the boy was of handsome appearance and

Moreover, he saw that (the student) was also more proficient in learning than others, and therefore developed affection for him. Although he had (him) in mind, he did not separate from the students, and since they were together day and night, there was no opportunity to speak. Because it did not go as he wished, he was always resentful. Later, a patron invited that teacher and his students together, providing food for three months, and entertained them. At that time, the Brahmin teacher and his wife discussed, saying, "The patron has invited me and the students together, providing food for three months. Now, should we appoint one of the students to stay outside to take care of the affairs?" The wife was happy and said to the Brahmin, "There are many affairs in the house that need to be done by someone who is knowledgeable and skilled. It is appropriate to leave the boy 'Fearless' outside to take care of the affairs." The Brahmin also agreed, and he said to 'Fearless', "You stay outside and take care of the affairs of the house and take care of everything. I am going because I have been invited by the patron." 'Fearless' stayed outside as instructed by the teacher. At that time, after the Brahmin teacher and his students left, the Brahmin's wife was very happy, dressed up carefully, and spoke to the boy with a seductive manner, but 'Fearless' held firm to his faith and did not waver. After that, she developed a strong desire and spoke frankly, saying, "I have always admired you, but there was no opportunity before. Now the teacher has also left, and you were deliberately left outside. Now is a good opportunity to be alone, so unite your heart with me!" 'Fearless' said, "I am a Brahmin, and the precepts of a Brahmin do not allow me to sleep with the teacher's wife. If I do such a thing, I will not be a Brahmin. Even if I die, I will not dare to do this." The teacher's wife, because she did not get what she wanted, felt ashamed and angry, and then harbored resentment and wanted to frame him. When the teacher was about to return, she tore her clothes, scratched her face with her nails, soiled her clothes with dust, and lay on the ground like a victim, without saying a word. After that, the Brahmin teacher returned and entered the house.
