说“放进针孔里”，比丘就按照吩咐，拿着针眼，放进门上的孔里，立刻就烧起来了。那个比丘惊慌失措地跑去，到世尊面前如是禀告。世尊对比丘这样说道：“这就是作恶的果报成熟啊。”说完，国王和眷属们都信服了。然后，具寿阿难陀向世尊这样禀告：“那位持鬘比丘，过去做了什么善事，才能拥有与大力士相当的神通力量，而且技艺高超，像鸟一样迅速？又做了什么善事，才能与世尊相遇，从而从轮回中解脱出来？为了怜悯众多的眷属，请您开示。”世尊说道：“你好好听着。过去，在光明佛的时代，一位比丘做了一件为他人服务的事情，他背了一袋粮食走着，路上被雨淋湿了。没有躲雨的地方，粮食和容器都被淋湿了。当时，比丘们想要快速行走，但因为喝了水，行走缓慢，无法快速前进，因此发愿说：‘愿我未来拥有与神通无量的人一样的力量，身体轻盈，像鸟一样飞翔。愿我未来与释迦牟尼佛相遇，从而从轮回中解脱出来。’阿难陀，不要想别的，当时做为他人服务的那位比丘，就是现在的持鬘比丘。当时，他出家并守护戒律，做了僧团的事情。因此，正如他所愿，无论他转生到哪里，都相貌端庄，神通力量和技艺高超。因为他发愿与我相遇，所以从轮回中解脱出来。”当时，阿难陀和比丘们，以及国王的众多眷属，听了世尊所说的果报成熟，都生起了精进心，思维四谛，有些人证得了入流果，有些人证得了一来果。

He said, "Put it in the eye of the needle," and the monk, as instructed, took the eye of the needle and put it in the hole in the door, and it immediately burned. The monk, frightened, went and reported it to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said to the monk, "This is the ripening of evil deeds." Having said this, the king and his retinue were convinced. Then, the venerable Ānanda said to the Blessed One, "What good deeds did the monk Angulimala do in the past that he possessed power equal to that of a great hero, was skilled, and as swift as a bird? What good deeds did he do that he met the Blessed One and was liberated from samsara? Please teach for the sake of compassion for the many in the assembly." The Blessed One said, "Listen well. In the past, in the time of the Buddha Light Protector, a monk performed a service for others. He carried a load of grain, and on the way, he was caught in the rain. There was no place to escape, and all the grain and containers became wet. At that time, the monks wanted to go quickly, but because they had drunk water, their progress was slow, and they could not go quickly. Therefore, they made this aspiration: 'May I in the future have power equal to that of one with limitless power, and may my body be light and swift, like a flying bird. May I in the future meet the Buddha Shakyamuni when he comes into the world and be liberated from samsara.' Ānanda, do not think otherwise, the monk who performed the service for others at that time is the current monk Angulimala. At that time, he renounced and kept the precepts, and performed the duties of the sangha. Therefore, as he wished, wherever he was born, he had a good appearance, and he was powerful and skilled. Because he wished to meet me, he was liberated from samsara." At that time, Ānanda and the monks, and the many retinues of the king, having heard the Blessed One speak of the ripening of karma, all generated diligence and contemplated the four truths, some attained stream-entry, and some attained once-return.
