于是，把他带到王宫里，放在铺设好的座位上。王子合掌说道：伟大的导师，为了您的慈悲，请您传授神圣的佛法。婆罗门说道：学习和修习都非常困难，寻找老师并了解也并非易事，仅凭这些是不够的，想听闻佛法是不合道理的。王子说道：伟大的导师，您想要什么就说吧，我即使是身体、妻子和儿子，如果需要，也全部不会吝惜，会按照您的吩咐去做。婆罗门说道：如果挖一个深十肘的火坑，里面装满燃烧的火焰，跳进去做供养，我就传授神圣的佛法。当时，那位王子按照老师的指示，挖了一个巨大的火坑。之后，国王、王后、大臣和王宫的侍从们听到发生了这样的事，身心都感到不安，全部来到王子的宫殿，向王子祈求，也恳请婆罗门，大家都恳切地劝说：尊者，请您发慈悲，不要让这位王子跳进火坑。需要侍从、妻子、女儿或我的身体，都可以献给您。婆罗门说道：我没有什么不能做的，但一切都取决于王子。如果他能做到，我就传授佛法，如果做不到，我就不传授佛法。侍从们也知道并理解了他的誓言是坚定的，所以都沉默不语。当时，国王派了一个信使，骑着一头能日行百千由旬的大象，派往整个赡部洲，宣告：各位国王和王子们，七天后，为了求法，他将跳入火坑。如果你们想见他，就赶快来吧。当时，小国王和许多百姓，哭泣着，虚弱地互相搀扶着，来到王子面前，右膝着地，合掌，大家都异口同声地说：我们都依靠着王子您啊！

Then, he was led into the palace and placed on a prepared seat. The prince, with palms joined, said: Great teacher, for the sake of your compassion, please teach the sacred Dharma. The Brahmin said: Learning and practicing are both very difficult, and finding a teacher and understanding is not easy either, so this alone is not enough, and wanting to hear the Dharma is not reasonable. The prince said: Great teacher, please say whatever you desire, and I will not spare anything, even my body, wife, and son, if needed, and will do as you command. The Brahmin said: If you dig a fire pit ten cubits deep, fill it with burning flames, and jump into it as an offering, then I will teach the sacred Dharma. At that time, the prince dug a huge fire pit according to the teacher's instructions. After that, the king, queen, ministers, and palace attendants heard that such a thing had happened, and they became uneasy in body and mind. They all came to the prince's palace and pleaded with the prince, and also earnestly pleaded with the Brahmin, everyone earnestly persuading: Venerable one, please have compassion and do not let this prince jump into the fire pit. If you need attendants, wife, daughter, or my body, you can have them. The Brahmin said: There is nothing I cannot do, but everything depends on the prince. If he can do it, then I will teach the Dharma, and if he cannot, then I will not teach the Dharma. The attendants also knew and understood that his vow was firm, so they remained silent. At that time, the king sent a messenger, riding an elephant that could travel a hundred thousand yojanas a day, and sent him to the entire Jambudvipa, proclaiming: All kings and princes, in seven days, for the sake of seeking the Dharma, he will jump into the fire pit. If you want to see him, come quickly. At that time, the small kings and many people, weeping and weak, supported each other and came to the prince, knelt on their right knees, joined their palms, and everyone said in unison: We all rely on you, Prince!

如果像我们的父母一样的您跳入火坑，那么对于所有这些臣民来说，将失去庇护和住所，为了少数人，请不要使所有臣民失去依靠，这样祈请之后，王子对那些民众宣告说：我从很久以前就在轮回中流转，已经转移了无数的身体，出生在人类之中时，因为欲望而不知满足，互相残害。即使出生在天界为天人，当天的寿命耗尽时，也要感受与欲望分离的痛苦。如果出生在地狱众生之中，也要感受被火烧，被放在铜锅中煮，被刀剑和武器砍杀，被扔进恶臭的液体中，攀登刀剑之刃，甚至一天之内也要经历无数次的死亡，感受着直至骨髓的疾病和死亡的痛苦，那是无法言说的。如果出生为饿鬼，也要感受身体无法忍受的各种痛苦。如果出生在畜生道，身体就会变成食物，背负沉重的负担，无法吃到草料，感受难以忍受的痛苦，即使身体和生命被耗尽，为了神圣的佛法，也从未生起哪怕一丝一毫的善念，现在就将这个污秽低贱的身体为了佛法而供养，不要做断绝我证得无上菩提之间的障碍。为了成就佛陀，我将完全舍弃这个身体，当何时证得正等觉成佛之后，我将把法身赐予你。这样说完之后，许多眷属都沉默不语了。那时，王子站在火坑边，对那位婆罗门这样祈请道：伟大的导师，请先为我讲授神圣的佛法，如果寿命终结，就无法听闻佛法了。这样祈请之后，那位婆罗门说了这些偈颂：应当习惯慈爱之心，舍弃嗔恨愤怒的念头，以伟大的慈悲救护众生，对一切众生心怀慈爱，流下眼泪，应当习惯伟大的喜悦，也将与自己相符的佛法给予他人，以菩提心守护，就具有菩萨的行为。

If you, like our parents, jump into the fire pit, then for all these subjects, there will be a loss of refuge and dwelling. For the sake of a few, please do not deprive all the subjects of their support. After praying in this way, the prince declared to those people: I have been wandering in samsara for a long time, and have transmigrated countless bodies. When born among humans, because of desire and not knowing satisfaction, they harm each other. Even when born in the heavenly realms as gods, when the lifespan of the gods is exhausted, they also experience the suffering of separation from desire. If born among hell beings, they also experience being burned by fire, being boiled in copper pots, being cut and stabbed by swords and weapons, being thrown into foul liquids, climbing the blades of swords, and even experiencing countless deaths in a single day, feeling the suffering of illness and death that reaches the bone marrow, which is beyond words. If born as a hungry ghost, one also experiences various kinds of suffering that the body cannot endure. If born in the animal realm, the body becomes food, bearing heavy burdens, unable to eat grass, experiencing unbearable suffering. Even though the body and life are exhausted, for the sake of the sacred Dharma, one has never generated even a single thought of virtue. Now, I offer this impure and lowly body for the sake of the Dharma, do not create obstacles to my attainment of unsurpassed Bodhi. In order to accomplish Buddhahood, I will completely give up this body. When I attain perfect enlightenment and become a Buddha, I will bestow the Dharmakaya upon you. After saying this, many in the assembly were silent. At that time, the prince stood at the edge of the fire pit and prayed to the Brahmin in this way: Great teacher, please first teach me the sacred Dharma, for if life ends, one will not be able to hear the Dharma. After praying in this way, the Brahmin spoke these verses: One should cultivate the mind of loving-kindness, abandon thoughts of hatred and anger, protect sentient beings with great compassion, have loving-kindness for all beings, shed tears, one should cultivate great joy, and also give others the Dharma that is in accordance with oneself, protecting with Bodhicitta, one possesses the conduct of a Bodhisattva.
