For the sake of sentient beings, having obtained the Dharma despite unbearable suffering, why now abandon all beings, completely separated from the light of the Dharma, and intend to pass into Nirvana? Furthermore, O Bhagavan, in the past, in this Jambudvipa, there was a great king named Bingling Garli. He ruled over various small kingdoms, possessing eighty-four thousand cities, twenty thousand consorts and palace maids, five hundred princes and crown princes, and ten thousand great ministers. That king was compassionate and regarded all his subjects as his only child. At that time, that great king was very devoted to and fond of the true Dharma, so he admonished a minister and ordered: 'Whoever has the Sutras or the true Dharma and can show it to me, I will give him whatever he desires.' Then, a Brahmin named Lenu Chu came to the palace gate and said: 'I have the true Dharma and will preach it to anyone who wants to hear it.' When the king heard this, he was very happy and went out to greet him, bowed to his feet with his head, and spoke pleasant words. Then he led him into the palace, had him sit on a prepared cushion, and said with folded hands: 'Great teacher, please preach the true Dharma to me.' The Brahmin said: 'I have experienced various kinds of physical suffering all over my body for a long time, and I am used to it. Great king, if you want to hear it, this is not enough.' The king folded his hands and said: 'Tell me what you want, teacher, and I will offer you everything without hesitation.' The Brahmin said: 'If a thousand iron nails are hammered into your body, I will give you the Dharma.' The king said: 'So be it. In seven days, these things will be prepared.' At that time, that king sent a messenger riding an elephant that could travel eighty-four thousand yojanas, proclaiming throughout Jambudvipa: 'The great king Bingling Garli will have iron nails hammered into his body in seven days.'

He ordered that a thousand nails be hammered in. When the ministers and many people heard this, they all came to the king's presence and pleaded, saying, 'All of us, the people dwelling in the four directions, enjoy happiness and well-being individually because of the king's merits and kindness. Great King, now we beseech you for our sake, please do not have a thousand iron nails hammered into your body.' At that time, the queen, the palace maids, the regent, the prince, and all the ministers also pleaded, saying, 'Great King, please have compassion on us, it is not right to end your life for the sake of one person and abandon all your subjects.' To this, the king said, 'For a long time, I have wasted countless bodies in samsara. Sometimes, because of desire, hatred, and ignorance, the white bones piled up from killing this body are higher than Mount Meru. The blood that flowed from severed heads is greater than the five great rivers. The tears cried are more than the four great oceans.' In this way, I have wasted body and life in various ways, but not once for the sake of the Dharma. Now I will hammer in nails and accomplish Buddhahood. Later, when I manifest as a Buddha and cut off your diseases of all afflictions with the sword of wisdom, why do you obstruct my mind of enlightenment?' After he said this, the many attendants also became silent. Then the king said to the Brahmin, 'Great teacher, please be compassionate, first teach the Dharma, and then hammer in the iron nails afterward. If my life ends, I will not hear the Dharma.' After he said this, that Brahmin spoke in verse, saying, 'All conditioned things are impermanent, all births are accompanied by suffering, all phenomena are empty and without self, and what is mine is also non-existent.' After saying this verse, he hammered a thousand iron nails into his body. At that time, the petty kings, ministers, and many attendants, seeing that it had become like that, collapsed to the ground like a great mountain falling, weeping and unable to remember anything, falling to the ground. At that time, the sky and earth shook in six ways.

The gods of the Form Realm and the Formless Realm were amazed. All descended from the sky and arrived before that Bodhisattva. Seeing him endure such great suffering with his body for the sake of the Dharma, they all wept, tears falling like rain, and offered celestial flowers. At that time, Indra, the king of the gods, came to where the king was and said, "Great King, you are exerting yourself so diligently, disregarding suffering. Is this for the sake of the Dharma? Or do you desire to be Indra? Or do you desire to be a Chakravartin king? Or do you desire to be a demon king? Brahma? Or Maheshvara?" The king replied, "What I am doing is not for the sake of enjoying the happiness of the three realms, but for the sake of desiring Buddhahood, for whatever merit there may be." Indra said, "When I see the king's body trembling and unbearable, and he says these words and says he has no regrets, how can this be believed?" The king said, "If what I say is true and I have no regrets, then may my body be restored to its former state, without wounds." As soon as he spoke, his body was restored to its former state, and the gods and humans were delighted and rejoiced. At that time, seeking the Dharma in order to protect many beings, the Bhagavan is the complete ocean of Dharma, endowed with immeasurable qualities. Why abandon so many beings and contemplate passing into Nirvana without teaching the Dharma? Bhagavan, in the past, beyond countless eons, in this Jambudvipa, there was a great king named Brahma Deva, and there was a crown prince named Dama-gam. That prince was very devoted to and delighted in the sacred Dharma. Although he sought the sacred Dharma everywhere, he could not find it, and he was afflicted with sorrow and became weary. At that time, Indra, the king of the gods, understood his thoughts very well, and transformed himself into a Brahmin and came to the gate of the king's palace, saying, "I have the sacred Dharma, and I will show it to you." When the prince heard this, he greeted him from outside and bowed at his feet.
