He ate them in front of everyone. At that time, the ministers of that king, seeing what had happened, cried out in sorrow and rolled on the ground, pleading, 'Great King, please stop this unreasonable act!' However, that king was so steadfast in seeking the sacred Dharma that he could not be dissuaded. At that time, that yaksha ate the king's queen and prince, and then spoke this verse: 'All compounded things are impermanent,' 'Whatever arises is accompanied by suffering,' 'The five aggregates are empty because they are without characteristics,' 'There is no self and no belonging to self.' After speaking this verse, the king was very happy and did not have even a hair's breadth of regret. Then, he wrote it down and proclaimed it throughout Jambudvipa, causing everyone to learn it. Then, the weary yaksha transformed back into his own body and praised, saying, 'Excellent! Wonderful and amazing!' The king's queen and prince also returned to their original state, unharmed. At that time, that king was the Buddha. The Blessed One said, 'If I have done such difficult deeds for the sake of the Dharma in the past, how much more will I abandon many sentient beings and enter into Nirvana now?' The Blessed One also said, 'In the past, countless eons ago, in this Jambudvipa, there was a great king named Kana Shini Pali, who ruled over many small kingdoms, possessing eighty-four thousand cities, twenty thousand queens and palace maids, and ten thousand great ministers.' That king was very compassionate, like a parent to many people. At that time, that king thought, 'I am also the leader of many beings, and many people trust and like me, I should benefit everyone with the sacred Dharma jewel.' So, he ordered a minister to post notices everywhere, saying, 'Whoever has the sacred Dharma, tell me, and I will give him whatever he desires as he wishes.' At that time, a Brahmin named Leu Duji came to the palace gate and said, 'I have the sacred

He said, "Yes." When the king heard these words, he went out to greet him, paid homage, and placed him on a prepared seat. After the Brahmin sat on the prepared seat, the king and his entourage, with their palms joined, urged, "Great teacher, now is the time for you to expound and reveal the sacred Dharma to those who are obscured by ignorance." The Brahmin said to the king, "This knowledge that I have is not something I have just learned. If you wish to hear it, this alone is not sufficient." The king said, "Speak of whatever you desire, and I will grant it all as you wish." The Brahmin said to the king, "Great king, if you can offer a thousand lamps lit on your body, then I will teach the Dharma." The king was exceedingly pleased and delighted, and at that time, he dispatched a messenger, sending one who could travel a hundred thousand yojanas with swift speed, to proclaim throughout all of Jambudvipa, "King Kanaishkinipali will, in seven days, for the sake of the Dharma, pierce his flesh and light a thousand lamps." When they heard this proclamation, they were filled with sorrow and arrived where the king was. Having paid homage, they all said, "All the living beings in this world who depend on life depend on you, O king. It is like a blind man depending on a guide, or a young child depending on its mother. If the king is no more, to whom shall we turn for refuge? If you light a thousand lamps on your body, you will undoubtedly lose your life. For the sake of a single Brahmin, to abandon all the sentient beings of this world, is this a proper consideration?" At that time, the queen, the prince, the crown prince, five hundred consorts, and tens of thousands of ministers, with their palms joined, entreated him, but the king, firm in his vow, did not relent, saying, "When I attain complete enlightenment, I will surely liberate you all." At that time, many people, realizing that the king was firm in his vow, were greatly displeased, cried out, and fell to the ground. The king's mind did not change, and he still thought of the Brahmin.

Thus it was said. The time has come for me to place a thousand lamps on my body. He ordered to pierce holes. He pierced holes in the king's body and soaked it with lamp oil. Many attendants, seeing this, fell to the ground like a collapsing mountain. Then, the king thought, the great teacher is compassionate to the Brahmin, first teach me the Dharma, and then light the lamps. If life ends, I will not hear the Dharma. The Brahmin spoke these verses: All that is permanent will perish. The high will eventually fall. Where there is gathering, there will be separation. Where there is birth, there will be death. As soon as he spoke these verses, the king rejoiced and vowed without regret: My seeking of the Dharma is to achieve Buddhahood. When I attain perfect enlightenment in the future, may the light of wisdom illuminate the darkness of sentient beings' ignorance. As soon as he made the vow, the earth and sky shook violently. Even the palaces of the Pure Abode gods shook. Those gods descended from the sky and arrived at the place of offering with their bodies. Seeing the Bodhisattva's body so destroyed, those who filled the sky wept. Tears of weeping fell like rain, and celestial flowers also fell like rain, making offerings. At that time, Indra, the lord of the gods, also came to where the king was, praised and extolled him in various ways, and said: Great King, are you not regretful in your heart, being so tormented by such suffering? The king said: There is no regret. Indra said: Great King, your body is trembling and uncomfortable, yet you say there is no regret. How can this be believed? The king said: If I have no regret from beginning to end, may the wounds on my body be healed as before. As soon as he spoke, his body became as before, without any wounds. At that time, at that moment, that king was the Buddha, the Bhagavan in the past as well.
