Because there is hope, one will die even without giving alms, and one will die even after giving alms. If one is pleased, it is better to give alms and die, because there is hope for the next life. You should also give alms as you please, he instructed. The wife went outside and said to the monk: Venerable one, please do not look for a moment, I will give alms. After saying this, the monk said: If you give alms, give them with your hands in person, I will say the verse of giving. The woman said: I only have this cloth on my body, if I go, I have no other clothes, a woman's body is dirty and smells bad, it is not suitable to look at, I will offer it from inside, after saying this, she took out the cloth from inside and offered it to the monk. After the monk said the verse of giving, he took the cloth and went to where the Buddha was, and after going, the Blessed One said to the monk: Give me the cloth offered by that woman. The monk also offered the cloth to the Buddha, and the Blessed One took it with his hand. Because the cloth was old and stained with dirt, the king's entourage was ashamed to hold the dirty cloth. After the Blessed One knew the thoughts of the many entourages, he said: In my opinion, there is no more pure giving than this in this entourage. He said. The many entourages were amazed. Then the king's consort was very happy, and took off the clothes and ornaments she was wearing and gave them to the woman. The king also took off his clothes and ornaments and gave them to her family, and ordered the couple to come into the entourage. Buddha Fortune Protector preached the Dharma to the many entourages, and most of them were liberated. The Blessed One said to Ananda: At that time, the poor woman was this Bhikshuni White Mother. At that time, because of sincerely giving the cloth, for ninety-one kalpas, no matter where she was born, she was always born with cloth, without the poverty of mules, and was as rich as she wished. After hearing the true Dharma from that Buddha, she made a wish to be liberated.

Here I met you and became an Arhat. Therefore, you should also strive to listen to the Dharma and practice giving. After saying this, the many attendants rejoiced at what the Blessed One had said and were very happy. The story of the poor woman offering cloth, which is the eighteenth chapter. The nineteenth chapter. The story of the poor servant woman selling poverty to Katyayana. At that time, the venerable Maha Katyayana was living in the country of Apada. In that country, there was a wealthy, miserly, and uncompassionate householder who had an old female servant. That servant woman did all the hard work, but had no clothes to cover her body and no food to eat. She was constantly beaten and scolded, and the old woman could not bear it. Thinking that she might as well die, she took a water pot and went to fetch water. At the riverbank, she cried loudly. Katyayana came there and asked: Old woman, why are you so unhappy? The old woman said: Venerable, I am old and frail, and my work is heavy. I have no clothes to wear and no food to eat. Because of poverty, I think, why don't I just die, so I cry unhappily. Katyayana said: Old woman, what if you sell your poverty? The old woman said: How can poverty be sold? Who would buy poverty? Katyayana said: Poverty can be sold. He said this three times. The old woman thought: Let me ask how to sell this poverty. So she asked: How can poverty be sold? Katyayana said: If you really want to sell poverty, do as I tell you. The old woman said: Venerable, I will do as you say. Katyayana said: First take a bath, and after washing, make an offering. The old woman said: I don't even have a piece of cloth, what can I offer? This water pot belongs to the mistress, I have no right to it. Katyayana said: Offer me and him clean water from the alms bowl. I will recite the verses of offering. Katyayana took the water, recited the verses of offering, and also gave instructions, asking her to recite the name of the Buddha, praising various virtues, and then asked: Old woman, do you have a place to live? The old woman said: I have no place to live, only a place for weaving, pounding rice, and working.
