I was born as a naga due to the breaking of vows, but now I am happy to keep the vows and be liberated from this body. Please grant me the ritual of the eight precepts for one day and one night. If you do not grant it, I will turn the king's land into the ocean, so send the message. Then, the guard took the fruit and offered it to the king, and fully reported the message sent by the naga to the king, and the king was displeased. Why is that? Because at that time there was no Buddha living in the world, and the sacred Dharma had also disappeared, and the example of the eight precepts for one day and one night could not be found. If the matter is not accomplished, it is feared that harm will be manifested, so he entered into contemplation. The king thought unhappily, and said to one of his ministers: A naga is asking me for an example of the eight precepts. If I cannot find it, I cannot refuse to give it. The minister reported: If there is no Dharma in the world, where can I find it? The king said to the minister: If you do not find it, I will kill you. The minister went home very unhappily. The minister had an old father. The father saw that his son used to speak with a smile and radiance, but now why is he speaking with a frown, unlike before? So he asked his son in detail what had happened. His father said: There is a pillar in my house that always emits light, see what is inside. So he pulled out the pillar and split it open, and from it came the Sutra of the Twelve Interdependent Originations and the example of the eight precepts for one day and one night. The minister offered it to the king. The king was very happy to receive it, put the example of the eight precepts in a golden box, and sent it to the naga. The naga was very happy to receive it, and also offered many treasures to the king. He kept the eight precepts for one day and one night, and encouraged others to keep them as well. Then, after he passed away, he was born as a god. The king also, in the same way, kept the precepts, and at the time of his death, he was born as a god in the same place.

Then, those two came before me in the first part of the night, and by teaching the Dharma in various ways, they attained the fruit of entering the stream, completely separated from the three lower realms, experiencing the enjoyments of gods and humans, and ultimately attaining the state of Nirvana. When the Blessed One had spoken thus, all the many attendants rejoiced and were exceedingly delighted. The third chapter, "The Constantly Following One Who Guards the Precepts," is complete. The Fourth Chapter: The Chapter on Offering by Selling the Body. Thus I have heard. Once, the Blessed One was in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Garden. At that time, in that country, a householder had a son born. That boy was well-formed, pleasing to look at, and very good. Not long after being born, he was also able to speak. That boy asked his parents, "Is the Blessed One still present?" They replied, "He is still present." He also asked, "Then are the venerable Shariputra and Ananda and others still present?" They replied, "They are also present." The parents of that boy thought, "This child can speak as soon as he is born; he is not human." They were amazed and astonished, and they reported it to the Blessed One. The Blessed One also said, "Your son has signs; do not doubt." The parents of that boy were exceedingly joyful, delighted, and pleased, and then they returned home. Then that boy requested his parents to invite the Buddha and the Sangha of monks. His parents invited the Buddha and the Sangha, and said, "We need to prepare offerings, but we cannot obtain them immediately." The boy said, "Sweep and clean the inside of the house. Spread out mats. Arrange three high seats and spread them out. Food with a hundred flavors will also come naturally. My former parents are also now in the city of Varanasi; please invite them as well." His parents, according to what the boy said, sent a man on an elephant and invited his parents as well, and they came. Of the three high seats that were arranged, one was for inviting the Buddha to sit, one was for his former parents to sit, and one was for his present parents who nurtured his body to sit.
