Asked again. Venerable, what is the basis of joy and displeasure? What is the origin? What is the aspect? From what is it born? What exists that joy and displeasure will arise? What does not exist that joy and displeasure will not arise? The Blessed One said: Kausika, the basis of joy and displeasure is desire. The origin is desire. The aspect is desire. The birth is desire. If there is desire, joy and displeasure will arise, and if there is no desire, joy and displeasure will not arise. Indra said: Venerable, it is so. It is so, the basis of joy and displeasure is desire. The origin is desire. The aspect is desire. The birth is desire. If there is desire, joy and displeasure will arise, and if there is no desire, joy and displeasure will not arise. Having understood the meaning of what the Blessed One has said, I have transcended doubt and am free from hesitation. Then, the lord of the gods, Indra, having heard the prediction of the Blessed One's question, praised and rejoiced in the Blessed One's teaching, and again asked the Blessed One: Venerable, what is the basis of desire? What is the origin? What is the aspect? From what is it born? What exists that desire will arise? What does not exist that desire will not arise? The Blessed One said: Kausika, the basis of desire is conception. The origin is conception. The aspect is conception. The birth is conception. If there is conception, desire will arise, and if there is no conception, desire will not arise. The lord of the gods, Indra, said: Venerable, it is so. It is so, the basis of desire is conception. The origin is conception. The aspect is conception. The birth is conception. If there is conception, desire will arise, and if there is no conception, desire will not arise.

Having heard the prediction of the request made by Śakra, Lord of the Gods, to the Blessed One, he praised the words spoken by the Blessed One and rejoiced. Then, he made a further request to the Blessed One, saying: Venerable One, what is the basis of conceptualization? What is its origin? What is its appearance? From what does it arise? What exists that causes conceptualization to arise? What does not exist that causes conceptualization not to arise? The Blessed One replied: Kauśika, the basis of conceptualization is elaboration. Its origin is elaboration. Its appearance is elaboration. Its arising is elaboration. If elaboration exists, conceptualization will arise. If elaboration does not exist, conceptualization will not arise. Kauśika, thus, if elaboration exists, conceptualization will arise. If conceptualization exists, desire will arise. If desire exists, liking and disliking will arise. If liking and disliking exist, jealousy and miserliness will arise. If jealousy and miserliness exist, seizing sticks and seizing weapons, as well as fighting, exposing faults, disputing, quarreling, being deceitful, deceiving, cutting off with punishment, as well as lying, and various sinful and unwholesome dharmas will arise. Thus, this great mass of suffering will arise. Thus, if elaboration does not exist, conceptualization will not arise. If conceptualization does not exist, desire will not arise. If desire does not exist, liking and disliking will not arise. If liking and disliking do not exist, jealousy and miserliness will not arise. If jealousy and miserliness do not exist, seizing sticks and seizing weapons, as well as fighting, exposing faults, disputing, quarreling, being deceitful, deceiving, cutting off with punishment, as well as lying, and various sinful and unwholesome dharmas will cease. Thus, this great mass of suffering will cease. Śakra, Lord of the Gods, said: Venerable One, it is so. It is so. The basis of conceptualization is elaboration. Its origin is elaboration. Its appearance is elaboration. Its arising is elaboration. If elaboration exists, conceptualization will aris

So it is. If there is no elaboration, conceptualization will not arise. Having understood this meaning spoken by the Blessed One, I have transcended doubt and am free from uncertainty. Then, Śakra, lord of the gods, having heard the request and prophecy from the Blessed One, praised and rejoiced in the Blessed One's words, and made a further request to the Blessed One: Venerable sir, you speak of the path that leads to the cessation of elaboration. Venerable sir, what is the path that leads to the cessation of elaboration? Which path does a monk enter to be on the path that leads to the cessation of elaboration? The Blessed One said: Kauśika, the path that leads to the cessation of elaboration is the Noble Eightfold Path, namely: right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right concentration. This is called the path that leads to the cessation of elaboration, and a monk who enters such a path is called one who has entered the path that leads to the cessation of elaboration. Śakra, lord of the gods, replied: Venerable sir, that is so. That is so, entering the path that leads to the cessation of elaboration is indeed so. Having understood this meaning spoken by the Blessed One, I have transcended doubt and am free from uncertainty. Then, Śakra, lord of the gods, having heard the request and prophecy from the Blessed One, praised and rejoiced in the Blessed One's words, and made a further request to the Blessed One: Venerable sir, what are the causes for a monk who has entered the path that leads to the cessation of elaboration to uphold the Prātimokṣa vows? The Blessed One said: Kauśika, there are six causes for a monk who has entered the path that leads to the cessation of elaboration to uphold the Prātimokṣa vows. What are these six? Forms cognizable by the eye, sounds cognizable by the ear, smells cognizable by the nose, tastes cognizable by the tongue, tactile objects cognizable by the body, and phenomena cognizable by the mind. Kauśika, the eye...
