A household with wealth equal to that of an unheard-of son, rivaling the wealth of Vaishravana (Tibetan: རྣམ་ཐོས་ཀྱི་བུ།), took a wife when the time was right. They played and rejoiced together, indulging in pleasure. Later, his wife became pregnant, and after nine or ten months, she gave birth to a handsome, lovely, and beautiful boy. They held a grand celebration for his birth and named him according to family tradition. They nourished him with milk, yogurt, butter, ghee, and the essence of butter, and he grew vigorously like a lotus in a lake. The boy was extremely lazy, so lazy that he always lay in bed and could not get up. His parents asked him, 'Son, are you physically ill? Or do you have some mental suffering?' But because of his laziness, he could not say anything. His parents took him to a doctor, who said, 'He has neither physical illness nor mental suffering; he simply cannot get up because of laziness.' Then, his parents repeatedly advised him, 'Son, do not be like this! You cannot find happiness by staying like this. The food that people live on is the fruit of what they can achieve.' Although they urged him many times, they could not get him to rise. Later, one day, his parents thought, 'If we invite learned people and offer them food, perhaps he will see them and want to get up.' So, they invited six heretical teachers and offered them food, but the boy did not get up even when he saw them. Then, the householder thought, 'The ascetic Gautama (Śrāmaṇa Gautama) is known to be very fortunate, and his words are powerful, so perhaps this child will see him and want to get up.' So, the next day, he invited the Buddha and the Sangha of monks to his house. That night, he prepared many clean and delicious foods, and the next morning he got up early, prepared the seats, and filled the water bowls. Then he sent a messenger to urge the Blessed One, 'Venerable ones, it is time for the meal, please partake of the food.' The Blessed One, knowing that the time had come, accepted the invitation and went.

In the morning, having put on the Dharma robes and lower garments, and carrying the alms bowl, with many monks attending behind, the monastic community of monks proceeded to that householder's place, and upon arriving, the monastic community of monks sat down on the seats prepared in the middle. Then that child, from afar, saw the Blessed One Buddha, beautiful and pleasing, with subdued senses, an exceedingly gentle mind, endowed with complete peace, shining like a golden pillar. Having seen this, he arose with respectful effort, went to where the Blessed One was, and upon arriving, bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One, and together with his parents, knowing that the Buddha and the monastic community of monks were sitting comfortably, he satisfied them with many clean and excellent foods and drinks from his own hands, offering them according to their wishes. Then, the Blessed One having finished the meal, knowing that the bowl had been washed and the hands had been cleansed, he took the lowest of seats and sat down before the Blessed One in order to listen to the Dharma. Then the Blessed One praised the child for his diligence, saying, 'Child, through diligence, you will attain the unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment.' Then that child thought, 'What the Blessed One has said is good, but because I lack diligence, I will not be able to attain the excellence of a guru. I will go into the ocean and pay homage to the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha.' Thinking this, taking goods to go into the ocean, he entered the great ocean, striving to go to the island of jewels, and having accomplished the purpose of sailing the great ocean, he came to Shravasti. He invited the Buddha and the monastic community of monks for three months, prepared all the necessary items, and for three months served the Buddha and the monastic community of monks with all necessities. On the final day, he offered the Buddha and the monastic community of monks food with a hundred flavors, and offered the Blessed One clothes worth a hundred thousand. Also to the other monks, each

Having offered some cloth, he made a prayer to attain the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment. Through this root of virtue, may I become a guide for the blind in the world, a teacher without a teacher, a Tathagata, Arhat, Samyaksambuddha, endowed with knowledge and conduct, Sugata, knower of the world, tamer of beings, charioteer, unsurpassed, teacher of gods and humans, Buddha, Bhagavan. Then, the Bhagavan said to that child: 'Child, well done, well done! Child, in the future, you will become a guide for the blind in the world, a teacher without a teacher, a Tathagata, Arhat, Samyaksambuddha, endowed with knowledge and conduct, Sugata, knower of the world, tamer of beings, charioteer, unsurpassed, teacher of gods and humans, Buddha, Bhagavan, endowed with strength and diligence.'" The story of "Anathapindika" is as follows: The Buddha was residing in Shravasti. At that time, there lived in Shravasti a poor Brahmin, struggling to make a living. He had many people to support and many servants. He thought: 'Which wealthy person should I rely on to seek a livelihood?' Then he thought: 'Anathapindika, the householder, is compassionate and generous, he will surely be able to provide for all my needs.' So, he followed Anathapindika like a shadow, never leaving his side. Anathapindika noticed him and asked: 'Brahmin, what do you need from me?' The Brahmin said: 'Householder, I need everything, I want to rely on you to seek a livelihood.' Upon hearing this, Anathapindika immediately began to prepare all the necessities for him. Later, one day, he went with Anathapindika to Prince Jeta's Grove. According to Anathapindika's custom, five hundred servants would go to Prince Jeta's Grove every day to clean. Later, one day, he had some business to attend to, so he let that Brahmin...
