The eighth chapter of the verses on discipline. The eighth chapter of the verses on discipline. Karma Hundred Thousand, Volume Thirty. The discipline is: Generous, charitable, and lazy, the unprotected and the small, two lotuses and views, precious treasures and the stealing of power, the generous and the righteous, diligent effort and without sorrow, the harmonious and of the lotus, the two lamas and the good seer, precious crest jewel, water wave, various victories, the last. This is called the verses on discipline. What is called 'Generous' is: He lived in the outskirts of Rajagriha (city in Bihar). At that time, in a mountain village in the southern mountains, there lived a Brahmin who was tall and wealthy, rich in possessions and great in enjoyment, whose possessions were vast and extensive, equal to the wealth of Vaishravana, competing with the wealth of Vaishravana, of a loving nature, compassionate, pleasing to sentient beings, loving to all sentient beings. He was called 'Generous,' and he lived in his house, giving and collecting for those who had gone forth and all beggars. He would arrange places for offerings from time to time and make offerings. Then, when a time for offerings came, he would contemplate all the tenets of the scriptures, and what the views of each were like. He kept those tenets in mind and contemplated, measured, and fully understood them. Then, one day, that Brahmin began to make offerings, and all the teachers gathered at that offering. That Brahmin also kept in mind the tenets of all the teachers and entered into contemplation, but his mind was not satisfied with those forms of views. Then, one day, the lay practitioners living in Rajagriha praised the Buddha in front of that Brahmin. As soon as he heard that, that Brahmin became eager to see the Blessed One. Then, one day, the thought arose in him: Thousands of ascetics and Brahmins come to the offering and enjoy it, but the Blessed One Gautama does not come. Alas, how wonderful it would be if he also came to my offering and enjoyed it!

Then, the Blessed One, knowing the thoughts of that Brahmin with his mind, thought: 'That Brahmin will generate an irreversible mind towards unsurpassed and perfect enlightenment, and relying solely on that, I will benefit many beings.' Thinking thus, attended by many monks, with the Sangha of monks leading the way, out of compassion for that Brahmin, he went to the city of Rībhraka. Having arrived there, the Blessed One thought: 'How should I bless it so that I alone am seen by the master of the sacrifice and many other people at the place of sacrifice, but the Sangha of monks is not seen by anyone?' Thinking thus, he blessed it in that way and went to the place of sacrifice. Then that Brahmin saw the Blessed One from afar. Having seen him, he said to the Blessed One: 'Blessed One, you have come well! Blessed One, please come here! May the Blessed One enjoy the offerings at my place of sacrifice.' The Blessed One said: 'Brahmin, I will not enjoy it until you have filled this alms bowl of mine with food and drink.' The Brahmin said: 'Blessed One Gautama, I will do as you wish.' Having said this, that Brahmin took the many clean and delicious foods and drinks that had been prepared at the place of sacrifice and tried to fill the Blessed One's alms bowl. But he was unable to fill it, and so he became arrogant, thinking: 'I will not let go of this alms bowl until I have filled it.' So, together with his servants, he strove to fill the Blessed One's alms bowl with food and drink. Then the Blessed One thought: 'Now this food is enough for a thousand monks.' Thinking thus, he showed that the alms bowl was full. Then that Brahmin, seeing that the Blessed One's alms bowl was full, became joyful. He said: 'The Blessed One's alms bowl is full, may the Blessed One Gautama enjoy it as he pleases.' Then, out of compassion for that Brahmin, the sacrifice

In that very place, he conjured up a thousand seats for monks, filling them with water. The Blessed One sat at the head of the row. The other monks were also arranged according to their seniority. Then, the monastic community of monks sat down comfortably, and the attendants began to serve. Then, that Brahmin also saw all of this, and as soon as he saw it, he became very happy with the Blessed One. He thought: This ascetic Gautama is truly powerful and mighty! He became happy, and bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One, and said: For three months, if the Blessed One Gautama would allow me to offer robes, food, bedding, cushions, medicine for the sick, and medicinal supplies to the monastic community of monks, that would be excellent. Then, the Blessed One did not say anything to that Brahmin, and thus granted it. Then, the Brahmin, knowing that the Blessed One had granted it without saying anything, prepared all the offerings in the grove of King Jeta, and for three months, he honored the monastic community of monks, headed by the Buddha, with all kinds of offerings. On the final day, he offered the monastic community of monks, headed by the Buddha, food with a hundred flavors, and offered the Blessed One robes worth a million. He also offered each of the other monks a pair of cloths, and made aspirations to attain the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, saying: Alas, by this root of virtue, may I become the Tathagata, Arhat, perfectly enlightened Buddha, endowed with knowledge and conduct, Sugata, knower of the world, tamer of beings, unsurpassed charioteer, teacher of gods and humans, Buddha, Blessed One, in a world of blind people without a guide or teacher! Then, the Blessed One said to that Brahmin: Brahmin, well done, well done! Brahmin, in the future, you will become the Tathagata, Arhat, perfectly enlightened Buddha, endowed with knowledge and conduct, Sugata, knower of the world, tamer of beings, unsurpassed charioteer, teacher of gods and humans, in a world of blind people without a guide or teacher.
