愿能令其欢喜，愿莫令其不悦。愿于彼之教法中出家，断除一切烦恼，现证阿罗汉果。诸比丘，汝等如何思惟？彼时之居家者，即是此比丘也。彼时，此人亦欲以布施胜过居家者水施，然未能胜过，遂出家而胜之。今此人亦欲以居家者给孤独布施胜过之，然未能胜过，遂出家而胜之。彼于彼处，一生行梵行，临终时发愿云：如是于正等觉佛光守护之教法中，一生行梵行，然未获得任何功德之聚。愿我能令正等觉佛光守护所授记之婆罗门童子，即是彼佛薄伽梵欢喜，愿莫令其不悦。愿于彼之教法中出家，断除一切烦恼，现证阿罗汉果。其后，诸比丘请问佛薄伽梵：世尊，此比丘乐于广大，欲胜过他人，然不愿被他人胜过。世尊告曰：非唯现在，过去世亦如是，此人如何乐于广大，欲胜过他人，然不欲被他人胜过，汝等谛听。诸比丘，过去世，于此贤劫，众生寿三万岁时，有正等觉佛，明行足，善逝，世间解，调御丈夫，无上士，调御丈夫，天人师，佛薄伽梵，名曰金幢如来出世。 彼于何时现证无上正等菩提而证悟成佛。

May I please him, may I not displease him. May I renounce in his teaching, abandon all defilements, and realize the state of an Arhat. Monks, what do you think? The householder at that time was none other than this monk. Now, he also wants to surpass the householder Anāthapiṇḍika in generosity, but he could not surpass him, so he renounced and surpassed him. There, he practiced celibacy for a lifetime, and at the time of death, he made a prayer: 'Thus, in the teaching of the perfectly enlightened Buddha Light-protector, I practiced celibacy for a lifetime, but I did not obtain any accumulation of merit. May I please the Buddha, the Blessed One, who is the Brahmin boy predicted by the perfectly enlightened Buddha Light-protector, may I not displease him. May I renounce in his teaching, abandon all defilements, and realize the state of an Arhat.' Then, the monks asked the Buddha, the Blessed One: 'Venerable One, this monk delights in greatness, seeks to surpass others, but does not want to be surpassed by others.' The Blessed One said: 'Not only now, but also in the past, how this person delights in greatness, wants to surpass others, but does not want to be surpassed by others, listen. Monks, in the past, in this fortunate eon, when the life span of beings was thirty thousand years, there appeared in the world a perfectly enlightened Buddha, endowed with knowledge and conduct, a Sugata, a knower of the world, a tamer of men to be tamed, unsurpassed, a teacher of gods and humans, a Buddha, the Blessed One, named Golden Banner.' May I go forth in only that teacher's teachings, abandon all defilements, and realize the state of Arhat. Monks, what do you think? Who was the householder at that time?
