Having renounced the world in the teachings of the Blessed One, we have abandoned all defilements and directly realized the state of Arhat. The Blessed One declared: 'It is due to the power of aspiration.' They asked: 'Where did these two monks make their aspiration?' He replied: 'Monks, in the past, during this very fortunate eon, when beings lived for twenty thousand years, there appeared in the world a fully enlightened Buddha, endowed with knowledge and conduct, a Sugata, a knower of the world, an unsurpassed guide for those who need to be tamed, a teacher of gods and humans, a Buddha, the Blessed One named Light-Treasury. These two renounced the world in his teachings, and there they gave generously and accumulated merit. They practiced celibacy for a lifetime and made an aspiration at the time of death: "Alas! By this root of virtue, wherever we two are born, may we be born into wealthy, rich, and prosperous families. May we please the fully enlightened Buddha Light-Treasury, who prophesied about the Brahmin boy, and may we not displease him. May we renounce the world in his teachings, abandon all defilements, and directly realize the state of Arhat." Monks, what do you think? Those two servants who renounced the world in the teachings of the fully enlightened Buddha Light-Treasury at that time are none other than these two who have renounced the world now. They renounced the world there, gave generously, accumulated merit, and protected celibacy for a lifetime. Due to the ripening of the karma from the aspiration they made at the time of death, wherever they were born, they were born into wealthy, rich, and prosperous families. These two have pleased me and have not displeased me, and they have renounced the world in my teachings, abandoned all defilements, and directly realized the state of Arhat.' The Hundred Deeds, the twenty-sixth chapter, called The Two Elders' Renunciation. The first elder's renunciation: The basis of the story is that he was residing in Shravasti. At that time, when...

After that, the householder Anathapindika, using the Jeta Grove of Prince Jeta as the site, had a monastery built that was complete in all its forms, and offered it to the Sangha of monks including the Buddha. At that time, in Shravasti itself, another householder thought: What means do I have to surpass the generosity of the householder Anathapindika? Then he thought: Rather, I will go into the sea to accomplish something. If I can accomplish the matter of a sea vessel there and then return, then I will be able to surpass the generosity of the householder Anathapindika. Then, he entered the great ocean, went to the Isle of Jewels to accomplish his business, accomplished the matter of a sea vessel, and then went to Shravasti. When he arrived there, he also engaged in giving and accumulating merit. However, he was unable to surpass the householder Anathapindika. Then one day, that householder asked the venerable Shariputra: Venerable Shariputra, by what means can one surpass the virtuous deeds of the householder Anathapindika? The venerable Shariputra said: The householder Anathapindika is known as a greatly fortunate person. He sees things that have owners, things that have no owners, things that are in the water, things that are on land, things that are far away, and things that are near. Therefore, you cannot surpass him by giving. Only by ordaining in the teachings of the Blessed One can you surpass him. Upon hearing this, that householder immediately began to give and accumulate merit, and then ordained in the teachings of the Blessed One. Having ordained, through diligence, practice, and effort, he abandoned all defilements and directly realized the state of an Arhat. He became an Arhat, free from the desire of the three realms, possessing a mind that equated gold with dung, possessing a mind like the sky and the palm of the hand, becoming as cool as if soaked in sandalwood, with the door of wisdom

Destroyer of my gaps, having obtained wisdom, clairvoyance, and individual correct knowledge, disregarding worldly gains, attachments, and reverence, has become a place of offering, remembrance, and respectful praise by the gods and their attendants. Then, the householder Anathapindika said, 'A certain householder has gone forth into the Buddha's teachings in order to overwhelm you.' Having heard that he had thus gone forth and abandoned all defilements, realizing the state of an Arhat, the householder Anathapindika was delighted. He went to where that monk was staying, prostrated at his feet, and said, 'Your going forth has overwhelmed me. Now, I will provide you with robes, food, bedding, cushions, medicine, and medical supplies as you wish, for as long as you live.' Then, the monks said to the Buddha, the Blessed One, 'Venerable One, this householder intended to overwhelm the householder Anathapindika with generosity, but he was unable to overwhelm him; instead, he was overwhelmed by his going forth. Moreover, he has pleased the Blessed One and has not displeased him. Look at him, having gone forth into the Blessed One's teachings, abandoning all defilements, and realizing the state of an Arhat.' The Blessed One said, 'Not only now, but also in the past, this householder intended to overwhelm the householder Chu-tod, but he was unable to overwhelm him; instead, he was overwhelmed by his going forth. He went forth there, practiced celibacy for one lifetime, and at the time of death, he made the aspiration: 'Alas! In this way, I have practiced celibacy for one lifetime in the teachings of the perfectly enlightened Buddha Od-srung, given offerings, and performed meritorious deeds. By this root of virtue, may I be born in whatever place I am born, into a wealthy, rich, and prosperous family. May I please that Buddha, the Blessed One, who was prophesied by the perfectly enlightened Buddha Od-srung to be the Brahmin boy who would become a teacher.'
