These different places are as follows: The venerable Purana Kassapa, Makkhali Gosala, Ajita Kesakambalin, Pakudha Kaccayana, Sanjaya Belatthiputta, and Nigantha Nataputta, each of them made their own vows. Then, the Blessed One spoke in verses at that time: "Good sir, when I was twenty-nine years old, I went forth in order to seek what is good. Good sir, since I went forth, until the age of fifty, I have practiced meditation. I have practiced all the disciplines, the bases of psychic power, and the concentration of mind. Even just speaking a small part of the Dharma that is in accordance with reason, is not found in other ascetic practitioners outside of this. Good sir, in the Dharma and Discipline in which there is no Noble Eightfold Path, there is no first ascetic. There is no second ascetic, third ascetic, and fourth ascetic in it. Good sir, in the Dharma and Discipline in which there is the Noble Eightfold Path, there is the first ascetic, the second ascetic, the third ascetic, and the fourth ascetic. Therefore, there are no ascetic practitioners or Brahmins outside of this. On the contrary, other disputing ascetic practitioners or Brahmins are empty. Thus, I roar the lion's roar in this assembly." When this discourse on the Dharma was being taught, the wanderer Subha attained the Dharma eye, which is without dust, without stain, and completely pure, regarding all Dharmas. The wanderer saw the Dharma, attained the Dharma, realized the Dharma, reached the depths of the Dharma, transcended doubt, transcended hesitation, did not rely on others, was not led by others, and having gained fearlessness in the teachings of the Teacher, he rose from his seat, draped his upper robe over one shoulder, and with his palms joined together, bowed towards where the Blessed One was, and said to the venerable Ananda: "Venerable Ananda, you have gained a great gain! Venerable Ananda, the great Teacher has appointed you as the attendant of the great Teacher. I have also gained a great gain, and I will go forth in the Dharma and Discipline that you have well-spoken."

If it is possible to receive full ordination and obtain the status of a bhikshu, I also wish to practice brahmacharya in the presence of the Blessed One. Then, the venerable Ananda rose from his seat, draped his upper robe over one shoulder, and, with his palms joined together, bowed towards the Blessed One, saying to the Blessed One: Venerable One, if this wandering ascetic could be ordained in the well-spoken Dharma-Vinaya, receive full ordination, and become a bhikshu, I beseech the Blessed One to grant him ordination out of compassion. Then, the Blessed One said to the wandering ascetic Rabzang: Bhikshu, come, practice brahmacharya! As soon as he heard those words, his hair and beard were shaved off, and he became as if he had been shaved for seven days. He wore the Dharma robe, and his conduct was as if he had been fully ordained for a hundred years. In his hand, he held a begging bowl and a water pot. Here it is said: The Tathagata commanded with the word "Come," he shaved his hair and wore the Dharma robe on his body. The Buddha, with his wisdom, assigned the robes, and immediately he dwelt in a state of perfect tranquility of the senses. Then, the Blessed One prophesied for him. He also, through diligence, practice, and effort, abandoned all defilements and personally realized the state of an Arhat. This Arhat, having become free from the desire of the three realms, became equal to gold and dung, possessed a mind like the sky and the palm of his hand, became as cool as if soaked in sandalwood, destroyed the shell of ignorance with wisdom, obtained wisdom, supernormal powers, and individual perfect knowledge, did not look to worldly gain, attachment, and respect, and became an object of worship, remembrance, and reverence by the gods, including the gods and attendants. Then, the venerable Rabzang thought: It is not my part to see the Teacher pass into complete nirvana. I should bless my mother with five blessings, and then pass into complete nirvana before her. May those who practice the same brahmacharya see me in the form of a bhikshu, and the other

May (he) be seen as in the guise of a heretic! May those who practice Brahmacharya be able to easily come to me! May other heretics be seen as surrounded by great waters! May those who practice Brahmacharya be able to carry my bones in a vessel! May outsiders not be able to carry (my bones) even by the hundreds or thousands! May those who practice Brahmacharya be able to light the fire that burns my bones! May outsiders not be able to light it even by the hundreds or thousands! May those who practice Brahmacharya be able to see my bones, and having seen them, may they also make offerings to the bones! May other heretics not see them! Having said this, the venerable Rabzang there blessed five blessings and then completely entered into Nirvana. Then, in the city of Kushinagar, the gods proclaimed that Rabzang had completely entered into Nirvana. Then, as soon as they heard this, the other wandering heretics raised cloth banners and proclaimed in the main roads, alleys, crossroads, and three-way intersections: "The ascetic Gautama says that there are no external ascetics and Brahmins, and those who speak of others (doctrines) are devoid of ascetics or Brahmins." They said, "In this cycle, I roar the true lion's roar!" They also said, "Now our Brahmacharya practitioner has also completely entered into Nirvana." After proclaiming this in the streets of Kushinagar, they went to the grove of twin Sala trees, to the place where Rabzang was, but they could not go to him. Then, the monks saw them and asked, "What are you coming here for?" They replied, "Our Brahmacharya practitioner has completely entered into Nirvana, and we will make offerings to his bones." The monks said, "This is our Brahmacharya practitioner, not yours! Haven't you seen that he has shaved his head and wears robes?" They replied, "We have three staffs and...
