He made them believe. Having gone to the stupa on the summit of Gaya, he made those thousand monks believe with three kinds of miracles, and placed them in the ultimate of eternity, the unsurpassed accomplishment, and the bliss of nirvana. Having gone to the forest of Smig, together with the king of Magadha, King Suddhodana, and his eighty thousand gods, as well as the Brahmins of Magadha and countless householders, he abided in the truths. Having gone to Rajagriha, he accepted the Light Garden, and ordained Shariputra and Maudgalyayana, who had two hundred and fifty attendants, and gave them full ordination. Having gone to Shravasti, he accepted Prince Jeta's Garden, displayed great miracles, and ordained the novice Kulajita, who also abandoned all defilements and directly realized the state of an arhat. He walked by means of miracles, and took untimely flowers and fruits from other places, offering them to the Khenpo and the Sangha. Then one day he went to the shore of Lake Anavatapta, and was delighted there. He established a daytime dwelling there, but the wanderer Subhuti said: Friend, this is my daytime dwelling, do not stay here. The novice Kulajita said: This is common to all. The wanderer Subhuti said: Compete with me in miracles. Then these two young men said: Whoever wins, this will be his daytime dwelling. So they began to display miracles, and there the novice Kulajita defeated the wanderer Subhuti, and he became disoriented, and went to the Udumbara Garden to stay. There, when the Blessed One had completed all the deeds of the Buddha, he went to the city of Kushinagar, and entered the final resting place. Then, the Blessed One thought there: Now the wanderer Subhuti and the Gandharva King Nandana, who are to be tamed by the Tathagata, are still alive. Then, the Blessed One thought again: The wanderer Subhuti is easy for me to tame, but

King Raba Ga, the king of music, lived arrogantly and recklessly, thinking, 'He will not come to me, I myself will go to him.' The Blessed One manifested an emanation there, disappeared from the grove of twin Sala trees, went to the Thirty-Three Heavens, and arrived at the gate of the palace of Raba Ga, the king of music. There, the Blessed One thought, 'First I must subdue his pride, then he will be a suitable vessel for the truths.' In order to tame him, the Blessed One manifested as a king of music, carrying an empty lute of lapis lazuli without strings. He stood at the gate of King Raba Ga of the Gandharvas and sent a message saying, 'A king of music is standing at the gate, he wishes to play the lute with you.' As soon as he heard this, King Raba Ga of the Gandharvas thought, 'Has another king of music appeared? I must defeat him.' So he said, 'Call him in, and I will show what I can do.' He called him in and began to play the lute together. Then, in order to subdue him, the Blessed One cut one of the lute strings, and King Raba Ga of the Gandharvas, seeing this, also cut one string. Then the Blessed One gradually cut all the strings, and when only one string remained, he still made all the sounds come forth from it. Then Raba Ga also cut all the strings, and he also made all the sounds come forth from that one string. Then the Blessed One cut that one string as well, and still made all the sounds come forth. Then King Raba Ga of the Gandharvas thought, 'I cannot show even the slightest superiority over him, this person must be far more excellent than I am.' Then, at that moment, the Blessed One thought, 'His pride, the clinging to the idea that there is no one equal to me, has disappeared.' The Blessed One subdued his pride and transformed him into the body of his own nature. Then, when he saw the Blessed One, he was filled with great joy and became very happy, prostrating at the feet of the Blessed One.
