I thought, just as the moon is obscured by Rahu, the monasteries have also become unsightly, and everything has become devoid of beauty. Those who possess knowledge, discipline, and taming, who adorn themselves with the jewels of faith, who possess patience and joy, and who can discern good from non-good, the holy ones, the temples, gardens, and stupas they built, those virtuous people who adorned this earth are no more. Seeing that there is no guide in the world, with extreme suffering and compassion, the gods and others are wailing and crying. Then, five hundred lay practitioners residing in कौशाम्बी (梵文天城体:कौशाम्बी,梵文罗马拟音:Kauśāmbī,汉语字面意思:Kauśāmbī) heard this, came out of the temple, raised their hands, beat their chests, and cried out: Alas, the teachings established by the Blessed One over countless eons are now to be destroyed by wrong views! They also said: In this terrifying world, for those who are devoid of good words, who will speak the true Dharma? Who will guide them to liberation from suffering? The light has disappeared, obscured by darkness, and people wander in confusion. Because there is no teaching of the Buddha, they have completely abandoned virtuous deeds, like wild animals without shame, always accompanied by sinful Dharma. Then, the king of कौशाम्बी heard that the Arhat had killed the disciple who was proficient in the three pitakas, became angry, majestic, and agitated, and was very dissatisfied. He harmed the teachings, destroyed the monasteries of the Sangha, demolished the stupas, and killed the monks. O powerful ones, in the future age, wherever great harm to the teachings will occur, you should gather there and protect the teachings! Then, they replied: As you command. The great king Dhritarashtra said: Venerable, I will protect the teachings from the east. Virudhaka said: Venerable, I will protect the teachings from the south. Virupaksha said: Venerable, I will protect the teachings from the west. Vaishravana said: Venerable, I will protect the teachings from the north. The lord of the gods, Indra, said: Venerable, I will protect from all directions.

Protect [it]. After thus beseeching, the Lord of the Gods, Indra, and the Four Great Kings greatly praised and rejoiced in the words spoken by the Blessed One. They bowed their heads at the feet of the Blessed One and then disappeared. At that time, when the Blessed One entrusted the teachings to the venerable Maha-Kasyapa and Ananda, the monks beseeched the Buddha, the Blessed One: "Venerable Blessed One, you have entrusted the teachings to the monk Kasyapa, and entrusted the treasury of learning to Ananda, and you foresee that these two will spread the teachings after the Blessed One passes into complete nirvana." The Blessed One said: "Not only now, but also in the past, I entrusted the four divisions of the army and the country to the monk Kasyapa, and entrusted the treasury of wealth to Ananda. Listen, these two protected and prospered the royal palace after my death." Monks, in the past, in the city of Mithila, there was a king named Great God who ruled. Later, his queen became pregnant, and after nine or ten months, she gave birth to a boy who was handsome, pleasing to the eye, and beautiful. They held a grand birth celebration for him, gave him a name that suited his lineage, and raised him with milk, yogurt, butter, ghee, and the essence of ghee. Later, the king became ill, and although he was treated with medicines from roots, stems, leaves, flowers, and fruits, he could not be cured. The king thought: "I will die from this disease, and this son is very young. After I die, people will think that the king is a child, and therefore he will be despised by everyone." Then, after I die and pass away, who here can support the foundation of the royal palace and have power? The king thought about this, and he had two excellent ministers, intelligent, clear, loyal, principled, gentle, and cautious, named Joy and Near Joy. Then, King Great God thought, Joy and Near Joy, after I die

After passing away, they will be able to protect the royal palace! Thinking this, the king sent messengers to summon those two ministers and instructed them, "You two should know that I will not be long before I pass away. After I die, you two must protect the royal palace!" After instructing them in this way, the king entrusted the prince and the royal treasury to one of them, and the four divisions of the army and the kingdom to the other, instructing them, "After I pass away, you two must protect the royal palace and make it prosper." After the king placed the prince on the throne, he passed away. Thereafter, after he passed away, the two ministers devoted themselves wholeheartedly. One protected the prince and the royal treasury, and the other protected the four divisions of the army and the kingdom. Thereafter, when the prince grew up and became strong, the two of them presented him with the treasures and the treasury. One presented him with the four divisions of the army and the kingdom, saying, "O deity, this is your father's property, please become king according to the Dharma!" O monks, what do you think? At that time, that old king, who abided in the conduct of a Bodhisattva, was myself! At that time, the one who protected the four divisions of the army and the kingdom was the monk Kashyapa (འོད་སྲུང་)! At that time, the one who protected the prince and the royal treasury was Ananda (ཀུན་དགའ་བོ་)! At that time, the prince who became king was Kasyapa (གསོ་མ་ཅན་)! At that time, I also In old age, entrusted the prince and the treasury to one person, and the four divisions of the army and the kingdom to another. Those two also, after I died, protected the royal palace and made it prosper. Now, I also, at the end of time, entrust the treasury of learning to one person, and the teachings to another. These two will make the teachings prosper after I have completely passed into Nirvana. Furthermore, the monks Ananda and Kashyapa made a vow, one of them
