Having arrived at the fertile land of Kauśāmbī, they heard that the venerable Piṇḍola-bhāradvāja was residing in the pleasure garden of the householder Ghaṇṭikāra in Kauśāmbī. Having heard this, they gathered from various assemblies and groups, and having assembled, they set out from Kauśāmbī and went to the venerable Piṇḍola-bhāradvāja. Having arrived there, they prostrated at the feet of the venerable Piṇḍola-bhāradvāja and sat before him to listen to the Dharma. Then, the venerable Piṇḍola-bhāradvāja, understanding their thoughts, predispositions, faculties, and natures, taught them the Dharma in accordance with them. Among the assembled crowd of people residing in Kauśāmbī, some, while seated on their seats, generated warmth; some generated the peak and the forbearance in accordance with the truth, as well as the supreme mundane qualities and the meditative absorption of seeing; some realized the fruit of stream-entry; some realized the fruit of once-returning; some realized the fruit of non-returning; some renounced and realized the state of an Arhat; some generated the seed of becoming a wheel-turning monarch; some generated the seed of becoming a powerful wheel-turning monarch; some generated the seed of becoming Indra; some generated the seed of becoming Brahmā; some generated the seed of the enlightenment of a Śrāvaka; some generated the seed of the enlightenment of a Pratyekabuddha; and some generated the seed of the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Among those assemblies, most were established in taking refuge in the Buddha, taking refuge in the Dharma, and taking refuge in the Sangha. Having seen the truth, they rose from their seats, draped their upper garments over one shoulder, and, bowing with folded hands towards the venerable Piṇḍola-bhāradvāja, said to him, 'Relying on the noble one, we sentient beings have been liberated from the hells, animals, and pretas, and have been allowed to walk among gods and humans. The ocean of blood and tears has dried up, the mountain of bones has been crossed, and those afflictions that have been habitual since beginningless time have been abandoned.'

It is cleared! Holy one, as long as we live, please accept from us food, clothing, bedding, cushions, medicine for the sick, and medicinal supplies. The venerable Piṇḍola Bharadvāja said: Friends, you should also benefit others, please let me go! Then, the assembly of people living in Kauśāmbī, praising and rejoicing in what the venerable Piṇḍola Bharadvāja had said, bowed their heads at the feet of the venerable Piṇḍola Bharadvāja. Those who had seen the truth would go to the venerable Piṇḍola Bharadvāja from time to time to listen to the Dharma. Then one day, the assembly living in Kauśāmbī, from assembly to assembly, the assembly of people gathered and went. King Udayana of Vatsa also fully armed himself with the four divisions of his army and went hunting. King Udayana of Vatsa saw the assembly of people living in Kauśāmbī going to the garden of Gṛhapati Ghoṣālīrika. Having seen this, he asked his ministers: Where are these people going? The ministers replied: Your Majesty, there is a son of a priest named Piṇḍola Bharadvāja, who has renounced his family and the uncrowned kingdom and has become a renunciate. He is traveling around and has come to Kauśāmbī, and is staying in the garden of Gṛhapati Ghoṣālīrika in Kauśāmbī. These people are there to see him. Having heard this, the king immediately said: He is someone I have long cherished, liked, respected, and remembered, so I will go to visit and pay homage to him. So he went to the garden of Gṛhapati Ghoṣālīrika. However, the venerable one neither welcomed the king nor stood up. As soon as he saw this, the king was overwhelmed by a great wave of anger, and after angrily paying homage to the venerable one, he left. Then he said to his ministers: Look at this son of a priest, the renunciate Piṇḍola Bharadvāja, who lives in my territory. When he sees me, he neither welcomes me nor stands up.
