Conditioned by birth, there is aging and death. What is birth? It is the birth, entry, complete birth, manifestation, arising of the aggregates, complete attainment of the sense bases, arising of the life force, and encounter with similar beings, of those beings in those classes of beings. This is called birth. Conditioned by birth, there is aging and death. What is aging? It is baldness, gray hair, many wrinkles, decrepitude, withering, bending over like a roof beam, the voice becoming hoarse, becoming a body through which breath flows, the body being covered with mole-like spots, the body bending forward, relying on a staff, the faculties becoming fully mature, completely decaying, the formations becoming old, becoming loose, dull, attached, declining, and completely declining. This is called aging. What is death? It is the dying, transference, destruction, becoming impermanent, the time of death arriving, the decline of life, the decline of warmth, the cessation of the life force, and the abandonment of the aggregates, of those beings in those classes of beings. This is called death. Combining this death and the previous aging together is called aging and death. Monks, this is the twelve links of dependent origination. What are the four noble truths? The noble truth of suffering, the noble truth of the origin of suffering, the noble truth of the cessation of suffering, and the noble truth of the path leading to the cessation of suffering. What is the noble truth of suffering? The suffering of birth, the suffering of aging, the suffering of sickness, the suffering of death, the suffering of separation from what is loved, the suffering of encountering what is not loved, and the suffering of not obtaining what is desired. In brief, the five aggregates of clinging are suffering. This is called the noble truth of suffering. What is the noble truth of the origin of suffering? It is this craving that leads to rebirth, accompanied by pleasure and attachment.

And possessing and manifestly delighting in that and that, this is called the noble truth of the origin of suffering. What is the noble truth of the cessation of suffering? That is, whatever craving arises, and possessing joyful desire, and manifestly delighting in that and that, completely abandoning those, and definitively abandoning, and becoming pure, and exhausted, and free from desire, and ceasing, and pacified, and extinguished, this is called the noble truth of the cessation of suffering. What is the noble truth of the path leading to the cessation of suffering? It is the eightfold noble path, namely, right view, and right thought, and right speech, and right action, and right livelihood, and right effort, and right mindfulness, and right concentration, this is called the noble truth of the path leading to the cessation of suffering. These are the four noble truths. What are the twenty-two faculties? The faculty of the eye, and the faculty of the ear, and the faculty of the nose, and the faculty of the tongue, and the faculty of the body, and the faculty of the mind, and the faculty of the male, and the faculty of the female, and the faculty of life, and the faculty of suffering, and the faculty of pleasure, and the faculty of mental pleasure, and the faculty of mental displeasure, and the faculty of equanimity, and the faculty of faith, and the faculty of diligence, and the faculty of mindfulness, and the faculty of concentration, and the faculty of wisdom, and the faculty of 'I shall know the unknown', and the faculty of knowledge, and the faculty of 'having known'. Monks, these are the twenty-two faculties. What are the four dhyanas? Monks, here, monks, secluded from desires, secluded from unwholesome dharmas, with thought and examination, born of seclusion, possessing joy and pleasure, having perfected the first dhyana, abide. Then, having abandoned thought and examination, inwardly purified, the mind becomes one-pointed, without thought, without examination, born of concentration, possessing joy and pleasure, having perfected the second dhyana, abide.
