Conditioned by existence, there is becoming. Conditioned by becoming, there is birth. Conditioned by birth, there are aging and death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, displeasure, and agitation. Thus, this entire great mass of suffering arises. When ignorance ceases, activities cease. When activities cease, consciousness ceases. When consciousness ceases, name and form cease. When name and form cease, the six sense sources cease. When the six sense sources cease, contact ceases. When contact ceases, feeling ceases. When feeling ceases, craving ceases. When craving ceases, grasping ceases. When grasping ceases, becoming ceases. When becoming ceases, birth ceases. When birth ceases, aging and death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, displeasure, and agitation cease. Thus, this entire great mass of suffering ceases. What is ignorance? It is like this: not knowing the limit of the past, not knowing the limit of the future, not knowing the limit of the past and future, not knowing the internal, not knowing the external, not knowing the internal and external, not knowing karma, not knowing ripening, not knowing karma and ripening, not knowing virtuous karma, not knowing non-virtuous karma, not knowing virtuous and non-virtuous karma, not knowing cause, not knowing effect, not knowing cause and effect, not knowing the phenomena arising from causes, not knowing the phenomena of dependent origination, not knowing the Buddha, not knowing the Dharma, not knowing the Sangha, not knowing suffering, not knowing arising, not knowing cessation, not knowing the path, not knowing virtuous and non-virtuous phenomena, not knowing what is blameworthy and blameless, not knowing what should be cultivated and what should not be cultivated, and not truly knowing, not seeing, not understanding, not directly realizing the six sense sources of contact as they are, being darkness, being completely deluded, being the darkness of ignorance. This is called ignorance. Ignorance!
