O great king, do you see or hear of beings in the four continents, even in the thousandfold world, the twofold thousandfold world, the threefold great thousandfold world, and all the immeasurable, boundless, inconceivable worlds, who consume very little food and drink for all time and for many eons? O great king, the wish-fulfilling jewel possessed by a universal monarch, which fulfills all desires, also arises from the accumulation of immeasurable merit in many past eons. It does not fall from the sky, nor does it appear suddenly. Is it the case that such meager food and drink, which will not be exhausted until the end of the eon, is of that kind? O great king, those fathers and sons and brothers who have not passed away, who hold each other in connection and wish to help each other, even if they have not died and still possess bodies, if one of them goes to another place, then his parents, son, or brother, whichever it may be, dedicates and prays for abundant food and drink for him, but even in the dream of the one who has gone to another place, it does not appear, let alone actually eating and drinking. How can there be eating and drinking for those who have passed away and are separated from their bodies, to whom offerings and dedications are made? O great king, after death, when the mind is separated from the body, how can this formless and immaterial mind possess the food, drink, and other tangible things dedicated by his sons and brothers? Why is that? Because eating and preparing food depend on the functioning of the limbs of the body, does the mind have the functioning of those limbs of the body? The great king asked: Blessed One, if that is the case, then is it meaningless to give food, drink, vehicles, clothes, and ornaments to help those who have passed away? The Blessed One replied: Great king, the one who has passed away, due to the ripening of the karma he has accumulated, wherever he takes rebirth in different realms of beings, if he is assisted by various virtuous deeds that transform into a collection of merit unrelated to negativity, then he can also be born in the heavens and the place of liberation. If one has already taken rebirth somewhere, and then is assisted by virtuous deeds that transform into merit, then the one who has taken rebirth can obtain wealth, a good harvest, and desired enjoyments.

And, all other beings will offer and respect, there is such benefit. However, the deceased, if they have not obtained rebirth, and exist in the world of the dead, they cannot possess food and drink, riding vehicles, clothes, and ornaments. Great King, what worldly people see, or what parents and others dream in their dreams, thinking that by offering to the deceased, the dead can enjoy food and drink, ride vehicles, wear clothes, and wear ornaments, and say such things, presenting such a scene, in reality, the dead cannot enjoy food and drink, nor do they have riding vehicles, do not wear clothes, and do not wear ornaments. They say such things, presenting such a scene, because the mind of a dying Gandharva approaches, or non-humans create such a scene. Great King, Great King, when beings pass away from here, if they have spoken to parents, siblings, children, etc., what words they said, what they looked like, then after they pass away, parents, siblings, children, etc. will say the words they said in their lifetime, and show their appearance. Worldly people will say they saw it, showed it, is this true? The Buddha replied: Great King, speaking relies on the mouth and tongue of a body, if the body of the deceased is left here, how can the formless mind speak? If it is said that the dead have a body, then they have already been reborn, and since they have been reborn, they need parents, so the world of the dead does not exist. Great King, the signs and marks of the un-deceased that worldly people speak of are done by a type of Gandharva called "Pervading". For example, just as a great wind blows simultaneously in plains and vast rivers, there is a type of Gandharva called "Vichana" that pervades the minds of all dying people, as well as the type of Yaksha who wants to speak, and the type of demon who wants to fully understand, called "Barhinidaguda". These non-humans, through these means, in order to deceive worldly people, show and say the words and clothing marks that the dead said in their lifetime. At that time, Devadatta was there, and the Blessed One said this to him.
