I prostrate to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Thus I have heard, at one time, the Blessed One was in the great city of Serkya, seeing that the time had come to subdue all the householders, in order to generate faith in them, he went with five hundred attendants. At that time, a man named Shakya Gayakye, who was in his prime, was very dear to all his relatives, and was revered by all people, died. Beside his corpse, his sons, wife, brothers, and servants had gathered herds of horses, herds of elephants, clothes, and various ornaments. They had also gathered various jewels such as gold, silver, pearls, and crystals. They had also gathered various delicious and sweet foods and drinks. They were lamenting and chanting, and making offerings, saying, "We offer to Gayakye." King Zhas Gtsangma thought: "In this way, they are making offerings and prayers to the deceased, and the Brahmins say that this is beneficial, but what benefit and happiness is there for them? I will ask the Blessed One." Then, he went to the Blessed One, prostrated, and said: "Blessed One, if I want to ask about how sentient beings change after death, would you please grant me the opportunity?" The Blessed One replied: "Great King, ask whatever you wish, and I will explain it to satisfy the Great King's mind." After the Blessed One said this, the Great King Zhas Gtsangma asked the Blessed One: "Blessed One, when sentient beings pass away from this world and are reborn in the next, do the gods also get reborn as gods? Similarly, do humans, animals, hungry ghosts, and hell beings also get reborn as humans, animals,

Do beings who die in the realms of existence, hungry ghosts, and hells transmigrate separately without mixing species? World Honored One, furthermore, do those who die from the gods transmigrate to other places such as humans? Similarly, if those who die from humans, animals, hungry ghosts, and hells also transmigrate, will they also be reborn in other places such as the gods? World Honored One, furthermore, do all sentient beings, after dying from here, completely disappear, becoming like ashes after a fire is extinguished, and there is no rebirth at all? World Honored One, furthermore, do all sentient beings, after dying from here, not take rebirth in the next world, but rather live together as they did here, with their fathers, grandfathers, great-grandfathers, and so on, who have been passed down from beginningless time? If worldly people say this, is it so? World Honored One, furthermore, will those who are rich, arrogant, and affluent in this world also be rich, arrogant, and affluent in the next world? Will those who are poor, destitute, and weak in this world also be poor, destitute, and weak in the next world? Or are these two situations different, and will they alternate with each other? World Honored One, furthermore, will those who ride horses and elephants, wear clothes and ornaments, and eat and drink food in this world also ride, wear, eat, and drink in the same way after death? If worldly people say this, is it so? World Honored One, furthermore, after someone dies from here, will the small amount of food and drink given or offered by relatives such as parents, siblings, or children not be exhausted even after many eons, and can they eat and drink it? If worldly people say this, is it so? World Honored One, furthermore, after a sentient being dies from here, will they say what they said to their parents, siblings, or children, and will their appearance be such that after death, their parents, siblings, or children will speak as they did before they died, and show their appearance, and can they be seen and heard? If worldly people say this, is it so? After this request, the World Honored One spoke to King Śuddhodana as follows: "Great King, after dying from here, the gods will be reborn as gods."
