What destroys this practice? How does one correctly take the vow of the charnel ground dweller? When staying elsewhere, one sees the faults of not generating aversion in the mind and of increasing carelessness. One also sees the benefits of being a charnel ground dweller, and says: From now on, I will abandon staying elsewhere and will correctly take the vow of the charnel ground dweller. Thus, one correctly takes it. The benefits of being a charnel ground dweller are: one can remember death, one can obtain the signs of impurity, one is respected as a guru by humans, one is respected as a guru by non-humans, the cause of diligence arises, one can subdue attachment to sensual pleasures, more aversion arises, one can endure fear and dread, one abandons pride arising from being alive, one can repeatedly and individually contemplate the nature of the body, it is the conduct of a holy person, and one has the quality of frugality. These and others are the benefits of being a charnel ground dweller. What kind of charnel ground should one dwell in? Who is a charnel ground dweller? What destroys the vow of the charnel ground dweller? First, one should dwell in a charnel ground where there is always a burning pyre, smoke, burning, and smoke. Then, one can also dwell in any other charnel ground. The charnel ground dweller should not build huts or houses in the charnel ground. One should not dwell where the wind rises or falls. One should not dwell in a narrow place. One should not consume fish, meat, milk, sesame oil, or bean foods. One should not accept alms bowls. One should not dwell in a house. If many people gather, one should take a cushion, Dharma robes, and pills and leave, not going too far from the pyre, dwelling in the charnel ground within the distance a stone can be thrown, and after dawn, one should take the cushion, Dharma robes, and pills and return. This is not his practice. The charnel ground dweller is one who has abandoned dwelling elsewhere. Promising to dwell elsewhere destroys the vow of the charnel ground dweller. How does one correctly take the vow of dwelling as it is? When one sees the faults of the abode of desire, of mutual strife, and of harming others. And one also sees the benefits of dwelling as it is, and

Saying, 'From now on, I will abandon the dwelling place of covetousness and take up the state of being as it is,' thus taking it up. The qualities of being as it is are these: abiding rightly within, honoring the guru, being content with whatever is obtained, abandoning attachment to it, having a loving heart, delighting in solitude, being worthy of faith, the conduct of a noble person, having a simple way of life. Such things as these are the qualities of being as it is. What is 'being as it is'? What destroys this 'being as it is'? 'Being as it is' is abandoning the dwelling place of covetousness. 'Abandoning the dwelling place of covetousness' means not clearing out a place that was previously occupied in order to take up residence. Taking up the dwelling place of covetousness destroys 'being as it is.' How does one take up the state of sitting upright? Seeing the faults of drowsiness, sleep, and laziness when lying down, and also seeing the qualities of sitting upright, one says, 'From now on, I will abandon lying down and take up the state of sitting upright,' thus taking it up. The qualities of sitting upright are these: completely abandoning the basis of laziness, attachment to the body, completely abandoning stinginess, not being attached to the pleasure of defilements, having few desires, little sleep, being in accordance with yoga, the posture of the body expanding, the conduct of a noble person, having a simple way of life. Such things as these are the qualities of sitting upright. What is 'sitting upright'? What destroys this 'sitting upright'? 'Sitting upright' is abandoning lying down. Accepting lying down destroys 'sitting upright.' Now, the exceptions for the one who wears robes made of rags are: if the one who wears robes made of rags continuously uses robes made of rags, if householders give cloth for robes, or cotton cloth, or Mon silk, or wool, then for the sake of exceptions, it may be accepted, so that the state of wearing robes made of rags will not decline. The exceptions for the three robes are: if there is hope of having enough food, one may keep extra cloth for ten days, and for the sake of protecting the dwelling place, there may be a mat, and a mat to spread on top, and
