Now, the causes are: to cover scabies, and face-wiping cloths, large summer cloths, and entrusting others' permissions, one may take them through permission, so that the three Dharma robes themselves will not be damaged. The permission for being a mendicant is: through the permission of designated food, tree food, half-month food, posadha, sangha food, and monastery food, one may fully enjoy them, so that the status of a mendicant will not disappear. However, by observing faults, one may fully enjoy them. The permission for walking in order is: at the door of a house, seeing an elephant, or a horse, or a bull king, or a dog, or fighting, or something shameful, and thus walking past, and walking past a house with inedible food, or a house with an overturned bowl, or a house called begging, and if walking with a teacher, or a khenpo, or a sudden visitor, or together, one may also walk past through permission, so that walking in order itself will not be damaged. The permission for eating in one sitting is: while eating, seeing an elephant, or a horse, or a bull king, or a snake, or lightning, or a khenpo, or a teacher, or a sudden visitor arriving, if one stands up, one may eat again through permission, so that eating in one sitting itself will not disappear. For those who are content with food and those who do not take food afterwards, there is no permission. The permission for living in a wilderness is: for the sake of the fully ordained work, or for the sake of recovering from a fall, or for the sake of listening to the Dharma, or for doing posadha, or for doing karma, or being sick, or for the affairs of the sick, or for mastering all the non-obvious sutras, or other similar causes, one may live on the edge of the village through permission, so that the wilderness dweller himself will not disappear. The permission for living under a tree is: if one encounters similar causes, or if one enters a house and is soaked by rain, even if dawn arrives that day, the tree dweller himself will not be damaged. How much permission there is for the wilderness dweller, one should also observe for the tree dweller himself, as well as the unroofed dweller, and the charnel ground dweller. The permission for living wherever one is is: if one encounters similar causes, and if someone else finds a place to live, then one should follow and allow it.

Indeed. There is no distinction for bedding. Some say that if analyzed by the nose, there should be a distinction, because the bedding itself will not be damaged. These thirteen qualities of asceticism, if summarized, become only eight, as it is said in the Abhidharma, "The qualities of asceticism are eight." If asked how that is, it is because being content with food and eating only once can be included in not accepting later food. Why is that? Because one who grasps at the extreme takes only his own share, so it can be included in being content with food. Also, not eating twice, so it can be included in eating only once. Dwelling under a tree, without a roof, and dwelling in a cemetery can be included in dwelling in a solitary place. Why is that? Because one who dwells in a solitary place, if building huts and upper stories in the solitary place, will be fond of work, and will grasp and be attached, thinking it is not his own part, so he dwells under a tree, without a roof, or in a cemetery. Therefore, there are only eight, and those eight are perfected by dwelling in a solitary place, picking rags from a dust heap, and begging. Thus, if the three doors of asceticism are perfected, all the qualities of asceticism will be perfected. Therefore, the Blessed One, relying on the venerable Delightful Beauty, said to Delight, "Delight, whenever you see those who desire to dwell in a solitary place, pick rags from a dust heap, and live on vile food, see that they have no views." What is a branch of asceticism? How many dharmas of asceticism are there? What kind of person delights in teaching the qualities of asceticism? How many branches of asceticism are there? What is the ultimate? Is the very essence of asceticism also the one who speaks of asceticism? To that, the so-called branch of asceticism is the abandonment of those thirteen bases, that is the branch of asceticism. What should the quality of asceticism be called? It should be called virtue. How many dharmas of asceticism are there? There are two dharmas of asceticism: non-attachment and non-ignorance, as the Blessed One said.
