It is said, what is a Dhuta practitioner? It is based on having few desires, based on contentment, based on the qualities of Dhuta, based on solitary places, and based on compliance that one becomes a Dhuta practitioner. Thus it is said. On the other hand, by not being attached and following the permission appropriately, one eliminates the delusion of striving after the alms of desire; by the virtue of purity, being without ignorance, following the qualities of Dhuta appropriately, one eliminates the delusion of striving after one's own exhaustion. Therefore, the Dharma of purity is twofold: non-attachment and non-ignorance. Among these, having few desires, contentment, and solitary places are non-attachment. The qualities of Dhuta and compliance are non-ignorance. Among these, non-attachment eliminates attachment to the thirteen things to be abandoned, and non-ignorance eliminates not knowing the faults of those things themselves. Furthermore, what kind of practitioners are happy to cultivate the qualities of purity? Practitioners of desire and practitioners of delusion are happy to cultivate the qualities of purity, but practitioners of hatred are not. Why do practitioners of desire and practitioners of delusion cultivate the qualities of purity, but not practitioners of hatred? Cultivating the qualities of purity is difficult to accomplish, therefore practitioners of desire, relying on difficult practices, will be able to subdue desire. Practitioners of delusion are the same; cultivating the qualities of purity, such as diligently upholding the qualities of Dhuta, will lead to constant mindfulness, and if one is mindful, one will be able to subdue delusion. Therefore, practitioners of desire and practitioners of delusion are happy to cultivate the qualities of purity. If practitioners of hatred cultivate difficult practices, it is like giving warm medicine to a patient with bile disease, which will cause hatred to arise again. Therefore, it is difficult for practitioners of hatred to cultivate the qualities of purity. Others say that practitioners of hatred are happy to live in solitary places and under trees. Why is that? Because living in solitary places and under trees, there is no fault of harm because there is no annoyance from unwanted things. The ultimate branch of purity is the end of time is

That which is called 'U' refers to the three ascetic practices: dwelling at the foot of a tree, dwelling in an unroofed place, and dwelling in a cemetery. These should be practiced until the end of eight months. The Blessed One permitted dwelling in a sheltered place during the summer. Is that which is asceticism also that which speaks of asceticism? The answer is: there are those who are ascetic and also speak of asceticism; there are those who are not ascetic but speak of asceticism; there are those who are ascetic but do not speak of asceticism; and there are those who are neither ascetic nor speak of asceticism. Among these, what is it that is both ascetic and speaks of asceticism? It refers to an Arhat who is fully endowed with the qualities of asceticism. What is it that is not ascetic but speaks of asceticism? It refers to an Arhat who is not endowed with the complete qualities of asceticism. What is it that is ascetic but does not speak of asceticism? It refers to a learner or an ordinary person who is endowed with the complete qualities of asceticism. What is it that is neither ascetic nor speaks of the qualities of asceticism? It refers to a learner or an ordinary person who is not endowed with the complete qualities of asceticism. What is the characteristic of the qualities of asceticism? What is excellence? What is abiding? The characteristic of the qualities of asceticism is having few desires. Excellence is contentment. Abiding is reducing possessions. In another way, the characteristic is being unpolluted. Excellence is being without fault. Abiding is not abandoning diligence. What is the beginning of the qualities of asceticism? What is the middle? What is the end? The beginning of the qualities of asceticism is taking up correctly. The middle is relying on it. The end is great joy. The teaching on the qualities of asceticism from the Path of Liberation, the third compilation, is complete. The Sutra on the Teaching of the Qualities of Asceticism from the Path of Liberation.
