that thinking is baseless. Those ascetics and Brahmins who possess knowledge, having realized those things, even without knowledge, claim to be perfectly enlightened in knowledge, and unanimously assert that it is only their ignorance that appears. Monks, that too is coarse, fabricated, thought out, and dependently originated. Thus, if formations exist, the cessation of formations also exists, so the Thus-gone One, having understood that it exists, turns away from it and sees it as peaceful, sees it as a definite departure, and abides in it. Monks, how many are those who speculate on the past, those who express the various forms of views related to the past? They are called the various forms of views related to the past. Monks, how many are those who speak of attaining Nirvana in this very life, who express the ways of expressing attaining Nirvana in this very life? Monks, here, some ascetics or Brahmins completely abandon the various forms of views related to the past, completely abandon the various forms of views related to the future, and in this very life, completely abandon the attachments to desires, having realized the joy of complete solitude through the body, they abide in it, and they think thus: 'Thus, I have completely abandoned the various forms of views related to the past, completely abandoned the various forms of views related to the future, and in this very life, completely abandoned the attachments to desires, having realized the joy of complete solitude through the body, I abide in it, like this, this joy of complete solitude is peaceful, this is excellent.' They think thus. The Thus-gone One knows that whichever ascetic or Brahmin completely abandons the various forms of views related to the past, and also completely abandons the various forms of views related to the future, and in this very life, completely abandons the attachments to desires, having realized the joy of complete solitude through the body, they abide in it, and they think thus: 'Thus, I have completely abandoned the various forms of views related to the past,'

And also, having completely abandoned the various views associated with the limits of the past and the future, having completely abandoned the connections of desire in this very life, having realized with the body and abiding in the joy of complete solitude, like this, he thinks, 'This joy of complete solitude is peaceful, this is excellent.' He also fully knows it as it truly is. Monks, that joy of complete solitude is also impermanent and subject to cessation. When the happiness of complete solitude ceases, displeasure will arise, and when displeasure ceases, the joy of complete solitude will also arise. Monks, it is like this, for example, when the shadow decreases, the sun will spread, and when the sun decreases, the shadow will spread. Similarly, when the joy of complete solitude ceases, displeasure will also arise, and when displeasure ceases, the joy of complete solitude will also arise. Monks, that is also coarse, fabricated, contemplated, and dependently originated. Just like this, if conditioned phenomena exist, then the cessation of conditioned phenomena also exists. Therefore, the Tathagata, having understood that existence, turns away from it, and sees it as peaceful, sees it as liberation, and abides. Monks, furthermore, here, some renunciates or Brahmins completely abandon the various views associated with the limits of the past, and also completely abandon the various views associated with the limits of the future, completely abandon the connections of desire in this very life, completely transcend from the joy of complete solitude, and realize with the body and abide in the happiness without defilements. He thinks like this, 'Just like this, I have completely abandoned the various views associated with the limits of the past, and also completely abandoned the various views associated with the limits of the future, completely abandoned the connections of desire in this very life, completely from the joy of complete solitude.'

A Brahmin, having completely abandoned all forms of views associated with the past extreme, and also having completely abandoned all forms of views associated with the future extreme, having completely abandoned all attachments to desires in this very life, having completely transcended the joy of extreme seclusion, and having realized and abided in the bliss without defilements with the body. He thinks thus: 'Like this, I have completely abandoned all forms of views associated with the past extreme, and also completely abandoned all forms of views associated with the future extreme, having completely abandoned all attachments to desires in this very life, having completely transcended the joy of extreme seclusion, and having realized and abided in the bliss without defilements with the body, like this, this bliss without defilements is peaceful, this is excellent.' He thinks thus, and also truly and completely knows it as it is. Monks, that bliss without defilements is also impermanent, and is of the nature of cessation, because when the bliss without defilements ceases, suffering will arise, and when suffering ceases, bliss without defilements will also arise. Monks, it is like this, for example, the water of light sometimes decreases and sometimes increases. Similarly, when the bliss without defilements ceases, suffering will also arise, and when suffering ceases, bliss without defilements will also arise. Monks, that is also coarse, fabricated, thought of, and dependently originated, like this, if the conditioned things exist, then the cessation of the conditioned things also exists.
