The Great Sutra Called the Five Threes. The Great Sutra Called the Five Threes. In Sanskrit: Pancatriya Nama Mahasutraṃ. In Tibetan: The Great Sutra Called the Five Threes. Homage to the Three Jewels! Thus I have heard, at one time, the Blessed One was dwelling in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Garden. Then, the Blessed One addressed the monks: Monks, whatever ascetics and brahmins explicitly state various grounds of fondness, all of them explicitly state five places. Which five? Some say, 'From then on, I will become a being with perception.' Others say, 'Without perception,' and 'Neither with perception nor without perception,' and 'Cessation.' And some say, 'In this very life, I will attain nirvana.' Thus they explicitly state. Ascetics and brahmins who possess knowledge and speak of beings with perception, some of them posit that a self exists, saying, 'From then on, I will become a being with perception.' Others say, 'Cessation.' And some say, 'In this very life, I will attain nirvana.' Thus they explicitly state. If those five exist, they will become three. If three exist, they will become five. This is a brief indication of the enumeration of the Five Threes Dharma. Monks, regarding this, whatever ascetics and brahmins speak of beings with perception, some of them explicitly state, 'From then on, I will become a being with perception.' Ascetics and brahmins who possess knowledge and speak of beings with perception, some of them posit that a self exists, saying, 'From then on, I will become a being with form and perception.' And 'Without form,' and 'One perception,' and 'Different perceptions,' and 'Small perception,' and 'Having become great perception,' and 'Immeasurable perception.' Thus they explicitly state. And some, opposite to this, explicitly state that it is the sphere of infinite consciousness. The Tathagata, regarding the ascetics and brahmins who speak of beings with perception, some of them, 'From then on, I'

Those possessing knowledge, the ascetics and Brahmins who declare the declaration of "becoming conscious," some of those who speak of being conscious may have a self, saying, "Hereafter, I will become a form with consciousness," as well as those without form, those with one perception, those with diverse perceptions, those with small perception, those who have become great in perception, and those with immeasurable perception, declaring the declaration. And again, some, contrary to this, declare the declaration of "it is the sphere of infinite consciousness," those who declare the declaration fully know as it is. Monks, those with diverse perceptions and diverse supreme designations, thus, in every way, having completely transcended the sphere of infinite consciousness, there is nothing. Thus, having attained the sphere of nothingness and abiding, being non-dual and unmoving, that is supreme, that is unsurpassed. Monks, that is coarse, compounded, thought of, and dependently originated. Thus, if there are formations, then the cessation of formations also exists. The Tathagata, having understood that it exists, turns back from it, and sees peace in it, sees it as liberation and abides. Monks, in this regard, whatever ascetics and Brahmins speak of being without perception, some of them declare the declaration of "hereafter I will become without perception," those ascetics and Brahmins who speak of being with perception, some of them declare the declaration of "hereafter I will become with perception," they refute what is said, they reproach, and they think thus: Perception is a disease, perception is a boil, perception is a thorn. Thus, being without perception is peace, this is excellent, they think thus. The Tathagata knows that whatever ascetics and Brahmins speak of being without perception, some of them declare the declaration of "hereafter I will become without perception," those ascetics and Brahmins who speak of being with perception, some of them hereafter.

Those who proclaim, "Hereafter I shall become a sentient being," refute and denigrate those who say, "I shall become a sentient being," thinking thus: Perception is a disease, perception is an abscess, perception is a thorn. Thus, non-perception is peace, this is excellent. Those who think thus also fully understand as it is. Monks, I do not regard the coming, going, abiding, deceasing, arising, increasing, developing, and expanding of consciousness as different from form, different from feeling, different from perception, different from formations. Monks, if anyone says, "I am the coming, going, abiding, deceasing, arising, increasing, developing, and expanding of consciousness, different from form, different from feeling, different from perception, different from formations," that is merely a verbal object, because if asked about a non-object, they cannot truly and fully understand, and they will be confused in their answer. Monks, that is also coarse, compounded, thought, dependent and related. Thus, if formations exist, then the cessation of formations also exists, therefore the Tathagata understands its existence, and having returned from it, sees its peace, surely sees and abides. Monks, for those ascetics and Brahmins who say that they are neither sentient nor non-sentient, some of them will refute and denigrate those proclaimers who proclaim, "Hereafter I shall become neither sentient nor non-sentient," those ascetics and Brahmins who say that they are sentient beings, some of them will refute and denigrate those proclaimers who proclaim, "Hereafter I shall become a sentient being." And, those ascetics and Brahmins who say that they are non-sentient beings, some of them will refute and denigrate those proclaimers who proclaim, "Hereafter I shall become a non-sentient being."
