And they think thus: Feeling is a disease. Feeling is an abscess. Feeling is an arrow. Absence of feeling is also complete ignorance. Like this: The sphere of neither perception nor non-perception is peaceful. This is excellent, they think. The Tathagata says to those ascetics and Brahmins who say that there is neither perception nor non-perception, some of them will henceforth become neither with perception nor without perception, thus declaring, those who declare will refute what is said by those ascetics and Brahmins who say that there is perception. They condemn, and some of those ascetics and Brahmins who say that there is no perception will henceforth become without perception, thus declaring, those who declare will also refute what they say. They condemn, and they think thus: Feeling is a disease. Feeling is an abscess. Feeling is an arrow. Absence of feeling is also complete ignorance. Like this: The sphere of neither perception nor non-perception is peaceful. This is excellent, those who think thus also fully understand as it is. Monks, I do not say that the remaining sphere of formations can be attained merely through seeing, hearing, distinguishing, discerning, discipline, asceticism, livelihood, ব্রহ্মacharya, austerity, and diligent service. Monks, I say that that sphere can be attained through the absorption of the peak of existence. Monks, just like that, what appears to be accomplished is also the affliction of that sphere. The Tathagata fully understands as it is those sufferings and accomplishments. Monks, that is also coarse, conditioned, thought of, and dependently originated. Just like this, if formations exist, then the cessation of formations also exists.

Because I exist, the Thus-gone One understands its existence and returns from it, observing it peacefully. He observes the arising and abides. Monks, regarding this, some ascetics and Brahmins proclaim annihilation, they openly declare that from then on I will be annihilated, those who proclaim annihilation, then refute and condemn those ascetics and Brahmins who proclaim consciousness, they openly declare that from then on I will be conscious. And they also refute and condemn those ascetics and Brahmins who proclaim unconsciousness, they openly declare that from then on I will be unconscious. And they also refute and condemn those ascetics and Brahmins who proclaim neither consciousness nor unconsciousness, they openly declare that from then on I will be neither conscious nor unconscious. They think like this: all these ascetics and Brahmins who possess knowledge, subsequently transmigrate, and speak of good wishes, are only openly declaring the wish that we will become like this or like that in the next life. They are only openly declaring the wish that we will become like this or like that in the next life. For example, when a merchant trades with goods, he thinks like this: I will obtain such and such things from these goods, and then go elsewhere. After arriving there, I will obtain such and such profits. Similarly, all these ascetics and Brahmins who possess knowledge, subsequently transmigrate, and speak of good wishes, are only openly declaring the wish that we will become like this or like that in the next life. They are only openly declaring the wish that we will become like this or like that in the next life. What they say is trade.

They think it will be like that. They also think like this: as long as I am this corporeal, coarse, arising from the cause of the four great elements, living and dwelling, living and existing, then I will be accompanied by disease, accompanied by tumors, accompanied by pain, accompanied by plagues, accompanied by complete suffering; as long as I die, I will be cut off and destroyed and no longer arise, then I will be completely and very well cut off. As long as the gods who enjoy in the desire realm, and the gods who enjoy in the form realm, and the formless realm, approach the sphere of infinite space, the formless realm, approach the sphere of infinite consciousness, the formless realm, approach the sphere of nothingness, the formless realm, approach the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, living and dwelling, living and existing, then I will be accompanied by disease, accompanied by tumors, accompanied by pain, accompanied by plagues, accompanied by complete suffering; as long as I die, I will be cut off and destroyed and no longer arise, then I will be completely and very well cut off. They think like this. Therefore, the Tathagata refutes those ascetics and Brahmins who speak of annihilation and proclaim, "After this, I will be annihilated"; for those ascetics and Brahmins who speak of consciousness and proclaim, "After this, I will be conscious," they will refute and condemn; for those ascetics and Brahmins who speak of unconsciousness and proclaim, "After this, I will be unconscious," they will also refute and condemn; for those ascetics and Brahmins who speak of neither consciousness nor unconsciousness and proclaim, "After this, I will be neither conscious nor unconscious," they will also refute and condemn.
