Thus thinking, "In this way, I have completely abandoned the aspects of views related to the past extreme, and also completely abandoned the aspects of views related to the future extreme, and in this very life, I have completely abandoned the universal union of desires. Having completely transcended the joy of extreme solitude, and also completely transcended the bliss without defilement, not painful, nor pleasant feeling, having realized with the body, I abide in practice, just like this, not painful, nor pleasant feeling, this is peace! This is excellent!" Thus thinking. The Tathagata has completely abandoned whatever aspect of views related to the past extreme of any Shramana or Brahmin, and also completely abandoned the aspects of views related to the future extreme, and in this very life, he has completely abandoned the universal union of desires. Having completely transcended the joy of extreme solitude, and also completely transcended the bliss without defilement, not painful, nor pleasant feeling, having realized with the body, he abides in practice. He thinks like this, "In this way, I have completely abandoned the aspects of views related to the past extreme, and also completely abandoned the aspects of views related to the future extreme, and in this very life, I have completely abandoned the universal union of desires. This is excellent!" Thus thinking, he also fully knows as it is in reality. Monks, the feeling that is neither painful nor pleasant is also impermanent and subject to cessation. From the cessation of the feeling that is neither painful nor pleasant, happiness and suffering will arise, and from the cessation of happiness and suffering, the feeling that is neither painful nor pleasant will also arise. Monks, it is like this, for example, if a stick is thrown into the air, it will either fall with the handle down or with the tip down. Monks!

Likewise, from the cessation of feeling that is neither suffering nor pleasure, pleasure and suffering also arise. And from the cessation of pleasure and suffering, feeling that is neither suffering nor pleasure also arises. Monks, that too is coarse, fabricated, thought of, and dependently arisen. Thus, if formations exist, then the cessation of formations also exists. Therefore, the Thus-gone One understands that it exists, and turns away from it, seeing it as peaceful, seeing it as definitive departure, and dwells in it. Monks, furthermore, here some renunciate or Brahmin has completely abandoned views associated with the past extreme, and has also completely abandoned views associated with the future extreme, and in this very life has completely abandoned complete attachment to desire, and has completely passed beyond joy that is utterly secluded, and has also completely passed beyond happiness that is without defilement, and has also completely passed beyond feeling that is neither suffering nor pleasure, and says this: ‘I am peaceful, I am extinguished, I am unobstructed, I am without appropriation, that self that I had in the past, I do not have now.’ The Thus-gone One fully knows that whatever renunciate or Brahmin has completely abandoned views associated with the past extreme, and has also completely abandoned views associated with the future extreme, and in this very life has completely abandoned complete attachment to desire, and has completely passed beyond joy that is utterly secluded, and has also completely passed beyond happiness that is without defilement, and has also completely passed beyond feeling that is neither suffering nor pleasure, and says this: ‘I am peaceful, I am extinguished, I am unobstructed, I am without appropriation, that self that I had in the past, I do not have now.’ That too is fully known as it really is. It should be understood thus: that venerable one has not completely passed beyond the path that goes along with appropriation. Therefore, it should be understood thus: whatever views associated with the past extreme become appropriation, and the future
