And become one who is mindful and aware. Ananda, if a monk dwells in this dwelling, if the mind focuses on sitting meditation, Ananda, that monk should wash his feet outside the monastery, enter the monastery, sit in the lotus position, straighten his body, maintain mindfulness, and then meditate. When he meditates in that way, worldly greed, displeasure, and sinful unwholesome dharmas will not follow his mind, and he will therefore become one who is mindful and aware. Ananda, if a monk dwells in this dwelling, if the mind focuses on various discriminations, Ananda, that monk should completely abandon unwholesome, painful, unholy, and harmful discriminations, such as: discriminations of desire, discriminations of harmful intent, discriminations of malice, and any similar discriminations. And he should discriminate wholesome, pleasant, holy, and harmless discriminations, such as: discriminations of renunciation, discriminations of harmless intent, discriminations of non-malice, and any similar discriminations. When he discriminates in that way, worldly greed, displeasure, and sinful unwholesome dharmas will not follow his mind, and he will therefore become one who is mindful and aware. Ananda, if a monk dwells in this dwelling, if the mind focuses on talking, Ananda, that monk should completely abandon unwholesome, unholy, and harmful talking, such as: talking about kings, talking about thieves, talking about battles, talking about food, talking about drink, talking about clothes, talking about roads, talking about prostitutes, talking about worldly legends, talking about legends of evil paths, talking about legends of the ocean, talking about the people of the country, and talking about legends belonging to great people, and any similar talking.

Speaking in this way, namely speaking of morality, speaking of concentration, speaking of wisdom, speaking of liberation, speaking of the wisdom of seeing liberation, speaking of few desires, speaking of contentment, speaking of non-association, speaking of reducing necessities, speaking of non-disturbance, speaking of abandonment, speaking of detachment, speaking of cessation, speaking of emptiness, speaking of the profound meaning of dependent origination, whatever such talk is, one should speak of it. When speaking in this way, greed for the world and displeasure, and sinful, unwholesome dharmas will not follow the mind, and one will become mindful and aware. Venerable Ananda, does the noble disciple hearer rely on any of these five desirable qualities and arise with attachment? Or, does one repeatedly examine one's own mind with respect to these five desirable qualities, thinking that one's mind does not rely on any of these five desirable qualities and arise with attachment? Ananda, I do not say that the mind arises with attachment from anything other than these five desirable qualities. Ananda, if that monk, when observing in this way, knows that his mind relies on any of these five desirable qualities and arises with attachment, Ananda, that monk should abide in constantly observing the impermanence of those desirable qualities, abide in observing their exhaustion, abide in observing their detachment, abide in observing their cessation, and abide in observing their renunciation. Ananda, when that monk abides in constantly observing the impermanence of those desirable qualities, abides in observing their exhaustion, abides in observing their detachment, abides in observing their cessation, and abides in observing their renunciation, then whatever attachment arises in his mind relying on any of these five desirable qualities will not arise.

So it shall be. Kashyapa, if a monk, when discriminating in that way, knows that his mind arises entirely dependent on any of the five desirable qualities, he should know to abandon it. He will become mindful and fully aware of it. Kashyapa, does the noble disciple, with regard to these aggregates he has taken, have the conceit of 'I,' the desire for 'I,' and the latent tendencies of 'I' that have not been abandoned, not fully known, not restrained, and not eliminated? Or, with regard to these five aggregates he has taken, are there no conceit of 'I,' desire for 'I,' and latent tendencies of 'I' that have not been abandoned, not fully known, not restrained, and not eliminated? He should again separately examine his own mind with regard to these five aggregates of clinging. Kashyapa, if a monk, when discriminating in that way, knows that with regard to these five aggregates he has taken, there are conceit of 'I,' desire for 'I,' and latent tendencies of 'I' that have not been abandoned, not fully known, not restrained, and not eliminated, Kashyapa, that monk should repeatedly observe these five aggregates of clinging in this way: 'This is form, this is the arising of form, this is the cessation of form.' Likewise: 'This is feeling, perception, formations, and this is consciousness, this is the arising of consciousness, this is the cessation of consciousness,' and should abide contemplating arising and cessation. When he repeatedly abides contemplating arising and cessation with regard to these five aggregates of clinging, then for him, whatever conceit of 'I,' desire for 'I,' and latent tendencies of 'I' that have not been abandoned, not fully known, not restrained, and not eliminated with regard to these five aggregates of clinging, will disappear. Kashyapa, if a monk, when discriminating in that way, knows that with regard to these five aggregates he has taken, the conceit of 'I,' the desire for 'I,' and the latent tendencies of 'I' arise, he should know to abandon it. He will become mindful of it.
