The conduct of children, the conduct of the foolish, and the conduct of those with perverted wisdom cause suffering, shame, regret, and reproach. They think thus: 'I formerly thought of impermanent things as permanent, I formerly thought of painful things as pleasant, I formerly thought of impure things as pure, I formerly thought of selfless things as self.' Thus, I formerly had the perception of permanence in impermanent things, the perception of pleasure in painful things, the perception of purity in impure things, and the perception of self in selfless things. Monks, it is like a person who is overcome by sleep and enjoys the five desirable qualities in a dream, playing and rejoicing. But later, when he wakes up, nothing is visible at all. Those beings who are of a childish nature, of a foolish nature, and of a perverted wisdom nature think thus: 'Those five desirable qualities that we enjoyed in the dream are truly and permanently existent.' Those beings who are not of a childish nature, not of a foolish nature, and of a wise nature think thus: 'Those five desirable qualities that we enjoyed in the dream are not truly and permanently existent; that was just a dream, that was just a deception.' Monks, likewise, a noble disciple who has heard the teachings also knows fully with his body the past, future, and present tangible objects. For these tangible objects, there is nothing that is permanent, nothing that is stable, nothing that is enduring, nothing that is truly so, nothing that is unerringly so, nothing that is undifferentiatedly so, nothing that is truly real, nothing that is truly true, nothing that is uniquely so, nothing that is as it is, nothing that is unerring, and nothing that is not inverted. It is merely empty, it is merely illusory, it is merely without essence, it is merely false, it is merely of a deceptive nature.

The demon is also like that. The demon's implements are also like that. The corpse is also like that. The corpse's form is also like that. Therefore, one should not be particularly delighted with it, one should not particularly praise it, one should not be particularly attached to it, one should not be particularly attached to it and abide in it. The Blessed One said, the noble one who has transcended the world is true, and thus one should individually discern. Having understood this, one should truly see the touches that are known by the body, past, future, and present, as diseases, and truly see them as boils, arrows, sins, impermanence, suffering, emptiness, and selflessness. He truly sees the touches that are known by the body, past, future, and present, as diseases, and truly sees them as boils, arrows, sins, impermanence, suffering, emptiness, and selflessness. When he does so, his body knows the touches that are past, future, and present, and for these, he abandons the reversed intentions, or reversed perceptions, or reversed minds, or reversed views, such as: the knot of the assembly of greed, the knot of the assembly of malice, the knot of the assembly that holds morality and asceticism as supreme, and the knot of the assembly that clings to and regards as supreme, thinking "this is true." Because he has abandoned these, the demon becomes frustrated and disappointed, becomes disoriented, and thus abides, and is not seen by the evil demon, destroys the demon and the demon's retinue, engages in a great battle, achieves complete victory in the battle, and completely defeats the battle situation and abides. Thus, for this noble hearer, abiding in the pursuit of diligence in higher wisdom is the supreme way of life among those who live by wisdom. Monks, how is it that the noble hearer abides in the pursuit of diligence in higher wisdom, and is the supreme way of life among those who live by wisdom? Monks, for this noble hearer, higher wisdom

Abiding in that which follows after engaging in excellence, I used to be attached to and abide in things like pleasant states of mind, which are objects to be cognized by the mind. I used to be angry and abide in things like unpleasant states of mind, which are objects to be cognized by the mind. I did not discriminate things like neutral states of mind, which are objects to be cognized by the mind. I abided in non-discriminating neutrality. Thus, having studied and practiced this for a long time, experiencing aging and death, and with the beginning of the past being invisible, I will now no longer study objects to be cognized by the mind as I did before. I will abandon the distorted intentions, distorted perceptions, distorted minds, or distorted views regarding objects to be cognized by the mind, whether past, future, or present. These include the knot of the assembly of covetousness, the knot of the assembly of malice, the knot of the assembly that holds precepts and asceticism as supreme, and the knot of the assembly that manifestly clings to and holds as supreme, thinking, "This is true." I must study in order to abandon these, and may I abandon them. This is why I make such distinctions. Monks, however, here, for some, those very objects to be cognized by the mind become pleasing, while for others, those very objects become displeasing. And for those, at times they become like pleasant states, at times they become like unpleasant states, and at times they become like neutral states. Monks, thus, beings here have long been obscured by the mind, deceived by the mind, and deluded by the mind, not seeing the faults and not fully understanding liberation, and thus are allowed to be manipulated as the evil demon desires. Monks, some ascetics or Brahmins do not see these objects to be cognized by the mind as true and existent, but rather how they themselves...
